The Associated Press reports former NFL DE Bruce Smith has been convicted of driving under the influence in Virginia. Smith was given a 90-day suspended jail term and fined $350. Smith said he plans to appeal the ruling.

The Associated Press reports former NFL DE Bruce Smith was charged with drunken driving Friday, May 15, after a police officer stopped him for speeding, according to Virginia Beach (Va.) police. Police spokesman Jimmy Barnes said Smith was released on bond a few hours after being charged with speeding, driving under the influence and refusal to take an alcohol breath test. Barnes could not determine whether a hearing date has been set.

"You're not going to remember Albert Haynesworth as a bust," Haynesworth said. "With the contract, it's going to be all on me. My goal is to be the best player on the field and to eventually get to that Hall of Fame status and be mentioned with Reggie White and Bruce Smith and all the greats."

Harvey Fialkov, of the Miami Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins rookie OT Anthony Alabi is often described as a nice guy off the field, a sentiment he wishes to dispel once he walks onto the football field during his rookie season. "That's naturally my mentality, but if you want to survive in this violent business you have to learn to change," said Alabi. "From what I've heard, [retired 10-time Pro Bowl defensive end] Bruce Smith is one of the nicest people off the field. If they call me a nice guy off the field, thank you. But if someone is trying to get to my quarterback I'm going to grab them by the throat. Don't mistake niceness for weakness." Alabi is striving to earn playing time at left tackle this season.

Washington Redskins DL Bruce Smith may have played his final game in the NFL according to Redskins.com. "I've accomplished so many things at a team level and on a personal level," Smith said during an interview on the NFL Network. "I think it would be befitting if I was able to walk away instead of going out crawling on one leg—I've had a lot of great memories, but I'm leaning towards that (retirement)." During Smith's 19-year career he has recorded 200 sacks – an NFL all-time record.

"Those are my intentions," Smith said. "Unless there's some unusual circumstance that comes into play, more than likely these will be the final three games of my career."

Mark Maske, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins DE Bruce Smith again voiced his frustration with his recent lack of playing time. Smith, who has been a reserve the last four games, even discussed the matter with owner Daniel Snyder following Sunday's, Nov. 23, game against the Miami Dolpins. "I can't help this team to win if I'm not on the field," Smith said. "This is not a selfish statement: I want to help this team win. Being on the sideline, my hands are tied. I think Mr. Snyder was also a little disappointed with that when I talked to him. I'm at a loss for words." Smith said, at an earlier time, that he would only accept being a backup if the team were winning.

Updating previous reports, Mark Maske, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins DE Bruce Smith will start Sunday's, Nov. 9, game against the Seattle Seahawks. Smith and head coach Steve Spurrier spoke on Tuesday, Nov. 4, about Smith's belief that he had been singled out when he was replaced in the starting lineup by DE Regan Upshaw. "I talked to him briefly," Spurrier said. "I said, 'We're okay.' He thought we were trying to single him out because we hadn't had much pass rush. I told him that after talking to the defensive coaches, he was back starting again based on performance."

According to Mark Maske, of the Washington Post, the Washington Redskins are contemplating making several changes to the team's defense. Defensive coordinator George Edwards said the team is considering creating expanded pass-rushing roles for LB LaVar Arrington and DE Ladairis Jackson. The team also plans to give DE Regan Upshaw more time and possibly curtail DE Bruce Smith's time to keep him fresh. Edwards also said that they may spend more time in the 3-4 defensive alignment. "We've used it in the past," Edwards said. "We'll see. We're in the early stages right now of [preparing for] Buffalo, and we're going to run what we deem necessary to get them stopped."

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Washington Redskins have reworked the contract of veteran DE Bruce Smith by transforming a $750,000 salary bonus to base salary for the 2003 season. Smith was originally due the bonus if he would have overtaken former DE Reggie White for the all-time sack record. Smith needs three sacks to break White's record. The team also placed a $1 million incentive bonus in Smith's contract if the team makes the playoffs in 2003. The reworked contract will benefit the team's salary cap for 2004.

Updating previous reports, the AP reports Washington Redskins DE Bruce Smith may still return to play in 2003. He had indicated in January he was leaning toward quitting. After meeting with coach Steve Spurrier and owner Dan Snyder, Smith is leaning the other way. "Dan and I had a good discussion, so I'm pretty optimistic," Smith said. "There's still some issues to work out." The coach said Smith is concerned about losing his starting job to DE Regan Upshaw. Smith said he'll decide soon whether to keep playing.

Updating earlier reports, the Jay Glazer reports for SportsLine.com the Washington Redskins and free agent DE Regan Upshaw (Raiders) have reached a contract agreement. "We have tentative agreement on a five-year contract," Drew Rosenhaus, Upshaw's agent, said Saturday morning. Upshaw could move in as a starter ahead of DE Bruce Smith, who is no longer expected to be an every-down player if he decides not to retire.
