Fri, 15 May 2009 16:20:29 -0700 The Associated Press reports former NFL DE Bruce Smith was charged with drunken driving Friday, May 15, after a police officer stopped him for speeding, according to Virginia Beach (Va.) police. Police spokesman Jimmy Barnes said Smith was released on bond a few hours after being charged with speeding, driving under the influence and refusal to take an alcohol breath test. Barnes could not determine whether a hearing date has been set.

"That's naturally my mentality, but if you want to survive in this violent business you have to learn to change," said Alabi. "From what I've heard, [retired 10-time Pro Bowl defensive end] Bruce Smith is one of the nicest people off the field. If they call me a nice guy off the field, thank you. But if someone is trying to get to my quarterback I'm going to grab them by the throat. Don't mistake niceness for weakness." Alabi is striving to earn playing time at left tackle this season.

"I've accomplished so many things at a team level and on a personal level," Smith said during an interview on the NFL Network. "I think it would be befitting if I was able to walk away instead of going out crawling on one leg—I've had a lot of great memories, but I'm leaning towards that (retirement)." During Smith's 19-year career he has recorded 200 sacks – an NFL all-time record.
