The Cleveland Indians released RP Chris Perez Thursday, Oct. 31, and re-signed 1B Jason Giambi to an undisclosed deal.
Fantasy Tip: Perez was demoted late in the regular season in favor of Joe Smith. Smith will likely enter spring training as the favorite to take the role over full time, but Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw could make some noise if Smith struggles out of the gates.

The Cleveland Indians could use SP Justin Masterson or Joe Smith in the ninth inning this weekend in save situations. RP Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw are other options depending on the game situation. RP Chris Perez has been demoted from the closer's role.
Fantasy Tip: If we had to bet, it'd be Smith closing out a game or two this weekend. However, it could also be Allen with the Indians trying to lock up one of the two Wild Card spots.

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said RP Chris Perez will no longer serve as the team's closer.
Fantasy Tip: It's expected that Joe Smith will receive the nod in the ninth with Perez hitting a rough patch heading into the postseason. If you need a save or two to gain a point and win your league, jump on Smith immediately for this weekend.

It looks as though the Cleveland Indians will go with a closer-by-committee with RP Chris Perez struggling. SP Justin Masterson will pitch the sixth inning but isn't an option to close.
Fantasy Tip: Joe Smith, who closed out the team's victory last night, is the likely option to replace Perez for the rest of the season and potentially in the postseason.

Cleveland Indians RP Chris Perez pleaded no contest and was convicted of misdemeanor drug abuse for marijuana shipped to his home Tuesday, Sept. 3. He was found guilty and fined $250 and was also put on probation for one year and ordered to speak to kids about drugs. A related criminal case against Perez's wife is pending.
Fantasy Tip: Perez shouldn't be in danger of being disciplined by the league other than having to undergo treatment programs for drug use. He has yet to test positive for marijuana, so until he does, he should be fine.

The marijuana possession case against Cleveland Indians RP Chris Perez could drag out until the final month of the season. The case will resume Sept. 3.
Fantasy Tip: It would be a total shock to see Perez suspended by the league or the Tribe for this charge this season, and that's assuming that he's found guilty in court. With Vinnie Pestano's struggles, Perez is in no immediate danger of losing his closing job, unless he's injured again.

The Cleveland Indians have activated RP Chris Perez (shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list. In a corresponding move, the team optioned P T.J. House to Triple-A Columbus.
Fantasy Tip: Perez will regain his closer role on the team and should be put in the starting lineup in all leagues.
