Cardinals | Jaime Garcia likely out until 2014

Wed, 22 May 2013 09:59:06 -0700

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) has received a recommendation from Dr. James Andrews to have season-ending shoulder surgery, according to sources close to the situation. Andrews confirmed a diagnosis of a "30 to 40" percent tear of the labrum in his left shoulder. The team doctor will perform the operation. According to those sources, Andrews told Garcia of his amazement that the pitcher was able to perform as well as he did considering the condition of the shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: The left-hander will almost certainly finish the 2013 season with a 5-2 record, a 3.58 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP and a 6.99 K/9 in 55 1/3 innings. It's disappointing, but this is the reason that Garcia came at such a seeming bargain in fantasy drafts. He can be dropped from redraft rosters, of course, and his keeper value is tenuous.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia going under knife

Wed, 22 May 2013 09:45:42 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) will undergo shoulder surgery.

Fantasy Tip: The talented but injury-prone southpaw doesn't disappoint on the negative side of his reputation. Stash him wherever possible, but this looks like it'll be a long absence, possibly the rest of the season, knowing his history of slow recovery. This might mean Chris Carpenter (shoulder) will come back sooner than expected this summer. He's worth a tuckaway.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia very concerned about injury

Sat, 18 May 2013 14:50:25 -0700

Updating previous reports, St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) said he is very concerned about his shoulder injury because it hurts more than it did last season. "It would say at this point it's worse," Garcia said. "There's pain. There's a lot more pain than last year. It started three starts ago. I was feeling great up to that point. Just tried to take care of it, doing little things here or there, and it went downhill. It got worse and worse. I'm very concerned. I'm very concerned."

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia going on DL

Sat, 18 May 2013 14:05:40 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals will place SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list because of a shoulder strain. The team will be recalling RP Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia has pitched pretty well this season but will be missing time because of his shoulder injury. Owners should consider placing him on their bench or disabled list until he is able to return. It is not known who will take his place in the starting rotation at this point.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) made his spring debut Tuesday, Feb. 26, and tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts in 43 pitches. "I'm excited about today. Cardinals | Jaime Garcia happy with progress

Tue, 12 Feb 2013 19:00:55 -0800

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) was encouraged by his progress after a bullpen session Tuesday, Feb. 12. He estimated it was his seventh or eighth side session already this spring. "I'm really encouraged," Garcia said. "I've been saying this the whole time. I'm feeling strong and healthy. Everything went this offseason as good as it could have gone."

Fantasy Tip: The Cardinals do not plan to limit Garcia's spring workload, and he is on the same throwing program he has followed in the past. If he can return to form, he'll be a solid starter in NL-only leagues, and a decent back-end fantasy rotation guy in mixed formats.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia expected to be fine

Tue, 12 Feb 2013 11:42:18 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (elbow) looked good while throwing Tuesday, Feb. 12, according to pitching coach Derek Lilliquist. "He looked great," Lilliquist said. "His arm strength is there. The secondary pitches. . . we know he has. Based on what I saw last week and now, everything looks very good." Lilliquist has full confidence that Garcia can bounce back from his injury last season to be a productive member of the rotation. Garcia has thrown off a mound seven or eight times after training in Houston in the offseason.
