Fri, 31 May 2013 14:31:10 -0700 The St. Louis Cardinals recalled RP Keith Butler from the minors Friday, May 31, and optioned RP Mitchell Boggs to Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move.
Fri, 31 May 2013 13:27:26 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said RP Trevor Rosenthal was unavailable to pitch in a save situation Thursday, May 30, because he had warmed up to pitch in the previous five games. RP Edward Mujica was also unavailable, so RP Mitchell Boggs received the save chance, which he promptly blew. Boggs has allowed a run in two of his three outings since being recalled from the minors May 19. Fantasy Tip: Boggs has been pretty awful this year, and another blown save likely means he won't get another shot at locking a game down in the ninth unless something drastic happens to Mujica or Rosenthal. Mujica has been rock-steady in the closer's role and is currently in no danger of relinquishing the job to Rosenthal.
Thu, 30 May 2013 14:32:56 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said RP Edward Mujica will not be available to pitch Thursday, May 30. Mujica has pitched in four straight games. Fantasy Tip: Expect Trevor Rosenthal or Mitchell Boggs to fill in if a save situation arises Thursday. Mujica has been rock solid for the Cardinals in the absence of Jason Motte this season.
Mon, 20 May 2013 05:51:39 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals RP Mitchell Boggs tweaked his mechanics at Triple-A and worked on his slider.
Sat, 18 May 2013 14:05:40 -0700 The St. Louis Cardinals will place SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list because of a shoulder strain. The team will be recalling RP Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis. Fantasy Tip: Garcia has pitched pretty well this season but will be missing time because of his shoulder injury. Owners should consider placing him on their bench or disabled list until he is able to return. It is not known who will take his place in the starting rotation at this point.
Fri, 03 May 2013 07:29:43 -0700 The St. Louis Cardinals purchased the contract of SP Carlos Martinez from Double-A Springfield. RP Mitchell Boggs was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Fantasy Tip: Martinez was 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA in three short starts at Double-A. He totaled 11 2/3 innings in those three starts. The Cards have a tendency to call up their top arms to give them experience in the bullpen. This is likely the case with Martinez because the rotation has been stellar. He has a lot of long-term fantasy value, but probably none right now.
Fri, 03 May 2013 06:39:24 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals RP Mitchell Boggs is likely to be sent down to Triple-A Memphis. Fantasy Tip: To put it nicely, Boggs has been a shell of himself this season. His velocity has been there, but his command has been nowhere close. Could the interrupted spring training caused by playing in the World Baseball Classic have messed with him? Either way, there's no sense in holding onto him. There's a chance he could regain the closer position from Edward Mujica, who's not a true closer, but not any time soon.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 12:07:16 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny wants to use RP Trevor Rosenthal as the eighth-inning setup man, and Rosenthal allowed two hits in two-thirds of an inning before needing RP Edward Mujica to bail him out Monday, April 22. Matheny also said that he'd consider using Rosenthal in the ninth inning in a save situation. "He's kind of a Catch-22. There are so many guys who have come into this organization with the great arms who don't know how to pitch," Matheny said. "We're constantly trying to get them not to be the dead-brain heavers. And then a guy like Trevor who has the kind of fastball where he could be a dead-brain heaver and do OK. It's a balance of how to use the secondary pitches. Those other pitches make his fastball better." Eleven of Rosenthal's 12 fastballs reached 99 mph or higher Thursday, but he's "still trying to get comfortable" in a relief role. Fantasy Tip: Mitchell Boggs is clearly the third option for saves now in St. Louis, with Mujica having closed out the last two and Rosenthal an option, too. Rosenthal is still young, remember, and he's working on how to consistently get major league hitters out and improve his secondary pitches. Mujica is the lead dog for now, but Rosenthal remains the better long-term saves option.
Fri, 19 Apr 2013 11:20:30 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals RP Edward Mujica got himself into a first-and-third jam with nobody out against the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, April 18, before retiring three hitters in a row for his first save of the season. Fantasy Tip: Mike Matheny chose to go with Mujica in the ninth over Mitchell Boggs, who has blown two of his four save chances to start the year. Mujica was shaky, however, but he got the job done, meaning Matheny will likely go to him again if another save situation arises. This isn't Mujica's job completely yet, though; if he falters, Matheny could go back to Boggs or try out Trevor Rosenthal, who has been struggling himself. Mujica is the best option to own at the moment, however, and he could run away with the job if he continues to get the job done.
Thu, 18 Apr 2013 10:28:18 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak believes the bullpen will be a strength eventually, but they've had their struggles to open the season, mainly with RP Mitchell Boggs. Mozeliak didn't rule out Boggs returning to the main closer role and running with it, however, he mentioned RP Edward Mujica and his veteran presence in the backend of the bullpen as a guy that could also settle into the role. Mozeliak said RP Trevor Rosenthal has a dynamic arm but isn't getting the results he wants, so he'll have to make some adjustments. The GM doesn't prefer a set closer or a closer-by-committee, he just wants to see the team win any way possible. Mozeliak said the team won't label anybody as the set closer for the time being, though. Fantasy Tip: All three relievers - Boggs, Mujica and Rosenthal - should be owned in all leagues. There's a good chance Mujica or Rosenthal get the next shot at a save situation. Boggs owners should hang on, but he probably doesn't have as much of a shot to regain the gig outright as Mujica or Rosenthal do.
