The Washington Post reports Washington Redskins C Mark Fischer tore his anterior cruciate ligament during Wednesday's practice and will undergo season-ending knee surgery. Cory Raymer is the starting center and he will be backed up by rookie OL David Brandt. The Redskins could be without two rookie defensive starters Sunday, CB Fred Smoot (knee) and LB Antonio Pierce (groin). Pierce would be replaced by Robert Jones and Smoot would once again be replaced by CB Darrell Green.

The Washington Post reports Washington Redskins LB LaVar Arrington has been upgraded to probable after he was able to return to practice today. Arrington was held out of some team drills as a precaution, but said he's confident he will be able to play -- if only in a limited role. RB Stephen Davis (sore knee) did not practice but he is expected back to work on Friday. C Mark Fischer (sprained knee) is questionable for Sunday.

The Washington Post reports Washington Redskins coach Marty Schottenheimer named OL Dave Szott the starter at left guard ahead of Matt Campbell and undrafted rookie David Brandt the starter at right guard over Ben Coleman. The coach selected Kevin Mitchell over Robert Jones at middle linebacker and reaffirmed the choices of Cory Raymer over Mark Fischer at center, Donnell Bennett over Bryan Johnson at fullback, Rod Gardner over Kevin Lockett at WR and David Terrell over Keith Lyle at free safety.

Associated Press reports Washington Redskins OL Cory Raymer appears to be winning the center job, although Mark Fischer made the competition closer than expected. Rookie David Brandt has moved into the right guard spot and will start there in Thursday's final exhibition game against the New England Patriots. Derrick Fletcher, who had been starting at right guard, is now the backup right tackle.

According to the Washington Post, Washington Redskins starting LT Chris Samuels probably will miss Friday's pre-season game with a strained muscle in his back. Matt Campbell will move to left tackle and newly signed Dave Szott will take Campbell's spot at left guard. Derrick Fletcher is scheduled to make his second straight start at right guard, and Cory Raymer is slated to continue to start at center. Mark Fischer will also see action with the first-team offense at center.

According to the Washington Post, Washington Redskins C Mark Fischer appears to be seriously challenging Cory Raymer for the team's starting center spot. Coach Marty Schottenheimer said he feels Fischer has outperformed all other offensive linemen in pre-season play. Only the tackle spots appear to finalized for the Redskins with Chris Samuels the starter at left tackle and right tackle which is held by Jon Jansen. Samuels was forced to miss practice with a strained muscle in his side and Matt Campbell took his place. Samuels may not play in this week's game. David Brandt and Derrick Fletcher got most of the work today with the first team at left and right guard.

Paul Woody reports for the Times-Dispatch the Washington Redskins have moved OL Mookie Moore to starting right guard. Mark Fischer and Derrick Fletcher are splitting time as the starting left guard. DT Dan Wilkinson appears to be the Redskins player who has "bulked up" the most during the off-season. He's listed at last year's weight of 313, but Woody said he looks closer to 330.

The Washington Post reports Redskins restricted free agent LB Shawn Barber was in conversations with another NFL team today, but his agents believe he'll re-sign with the Redskins. In other news, the team is also close to re-signing OL Jay Leeuwenburg. RB Skip Hicks is the team's other restricted free agent. As an update to previous reports, the one-year deal C Mark Fischer received from the team is worth $512,000. Finally, the team is likely to announce they'll be returning to Dickinson College for training camp sometime in the next week.

Paul Woody reports for the Times Dispatch Washington Redskins S Mark Carrier and his $2 million salary cap figure for 2001 could be a potential cap cut come June 1. He faces a potential two-game or more suspension to start the season for a hit he made in the final game of the 2000 regular season, and his performances faded late last season. He still has $2.4 million of his signing bonus left to be accounted for, but by releasing him after June 1, the Redskins can split that over two years. S Sam Shade and his salary of $2.3 million for 2001, also looks vulnerable to a salary cap move. If OL Cory Raymer can return to the lineup, Mark Fischer may be moved to left guard.

The Washington Post reports the Washington Redskins tendered a contract offer to LB Shawn Barber, a potential restricted free agent, that would require any other NFL team signing him to provide the Redskins with a first-round draft choice as compensation. His salary for 2001 would be $1.115 million if he accepts the Redskins one-year tender offer. The team also gave one-year, $512,000 tender offers to three of their other prospective restricted free agents: RB Skip Hicks, OC Mark Fischer and FB/TE Mike Sellers. The Redskins did not tender an offer to LB Tyrus McCloud, making him an unrestricted free agent come March 2.
