The Washington Post reports the Redskins have tentatively scheduled a visit with free agent PK John Carney (Chargers) for next week. The Redskins also seem likely to lose the two other free agents coach Marty Schottenheimer has expressed interest in retaining, DE N.D. Kalu and MLB Derek Smith. The contract signed earlier today by long snapper Ethan Albright was for three years and he likely will earn around the minimum $477,000 in 2001. Back on February 17 we reported a potential trade of DE Kenard Lang to the Bears, which died quickly. Today coach Schottenheimer said any trade of Lang would probably not happen. Reportedly agent Drew Rosenhaus and Lang are concerned about Lang's move to DT being permanent and have asked for Lang to be traded. The player and agent had no comment.

As previously reported the team also met with free agent OL Dave Szott (Chiefs) and OL/long snapper Ethan Albright (Bills), earlier today. Conway said he would be open to returning to the Redskins, despite last season's release. The team is leaving open the possibility of pursuing free agent QBs Doug Flutie (Bills) and Trent Dilfer (Ravens) later in free agency, if they remain unsigned. With Flutie drawing interest from a few teams and a reported contract offer from the Chargers, he may not be on the market for long. CB Champ Bailey and DE Marco Coleman helped the salary cap cause by restructuring their contracts earlier.

The Washington Post reports the team will visit with free agent OL Dave Szott (Chiefs) on Thursday. Free agent OL/long snapper Ethan Albright (Bills) will also visit on Thursday. Reportedly the team is pursuing a pair of free agent PKs, John Carney (Chargers) and Doug Brien (Saints), but no visits have been set up. Coach Marty Schottenheimer said he is not yet ready to pursue a free agent QB. Jack Mills, Carney's agent, said he had a conversation with the Redskins Tuesday night. Mike Kagnoff, Brien's agent, also said he had preliminary conversations with the Redskins. The team's interest in free agent PKs Morten Andersen and Steve Christie seems low and Al Del Greco and Brad Daluiso don't appear to be on their short list.

Both might be able to stay under contract if he agrees to take a significant salary cut. Holecek could be in jeopardy because the Bills are expected to play a lot of 4-3 defense this year. Irvin is a solid cornerback but the Bills could save $1.48 million by releasing him. The team could save about $600,000 by releasing long snapper Ethan Albright. As for QB, the team now says a decision regarding which one they keep will come in "the middle of next week."
