Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, reports the Chicago Bears signed WR Eddie Berlin primarily because of his special teams skills. However, Berlin had another excellent practice Wednesday morning, July 27, as he continues to impress the team with his receiving skills. He is currently working with the second team offense. "Special teams are one of the things that have helped me keep a job in the NFL for four years," Berlin said. "But at the same time I'm still a receiver at heart and I like to play some receiver. I just need to excel at both right now." Berlin's chances of making the roster certainly would improve if the team opted to keep six wide receivers on the 53-man roster.

Terry Bannon, reports for the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Bears are looking to WR Eddie Berlin to contribute heavily on special teams. The Bears see the Tennessee Titans castoff as a potentially excellent special-teamer. Berlin's potential contributions on special teams may land him a roster spot, even if he is not part of the team's regular wide receiver rotation. Berlin has returned punts and kickoffs, but the Bears want him for his ability to cover kicks. He was consistently one of Tennessee's top special teams' tacklers.

"I'm sure it's going to be real competitive, which is a great thing," Berlin said. "It's going to create a lot of good competition. It's a young group and there are a lot of guys who are eager to play and make their mark." Offensive coordinator Ron Turner has been impressed by Berlin thus far. "From what I've seen so far," said Turner, "(Berlin) has really good, consistent hands, good quickness and a good feel, especially as an inside receiver." Berlin is expected to primarily compete with WR Bobby Wade for playing time at the slot position this year.

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Tennessee Titans have re-signed restricted free agent WR Eddie Berlin to a one-year, $628,000 deal. The contract also includes an option for 2005, which could be exercised by the Titans next March. If the club exercises the option, Berlin will receive a $600,000 base salary, with $300,000 of it guaranteed. If the option is declined, Berlin would immediately be an unrestricted free agent.
