Allmendinger was fired in July after testing positive for a banned substance. Hornish has an average finish of 19th but has three top-12 finishes and five top-20s in eight starts. He will run a full Nationwide schedule next year with select Cup races.

Allmendinger is entered in NASCAR's Road to Recovery program that takes four to five months before he'll be eligible for reinstatement. The team is unsure if they will allow Allmendinger to return for the 2013 Sprint Cup season. Driver Sam Hornish Jr. will likely remain the driver for the rest of the season in Allmendinger's place.

Allmendinger was suspended indefinitely by NASCAR Tuesday, July 24, after a second test of his urine sample produced a positive result. He will be officially informed of the results by letter, and, at the same time, will be given the opportunity to participate in NASCAR's rehabilitation program. Completion of the program typically results in reinstatement. In the meantime, Penske Racing said Sam Hornish Jr. will continue to drive the Penske No. 22 Sprint Cup Series car, at least in the next two races at Indianapolis and Pocono.

Allmendinger back in the No. 22 Sprint Cup car if his second urine test comes back negative. Driver Sam Hornish Jr. will replace Allmendinger if the second test confirms the first test of a positive stimulant.

The suspension was announced just hours before the Coke Zero 400 Saturday, July 7, at Daytona International Speedway. Allmendinger had a sample taken at Kentucky Speedway last weekend return positive. The driver has 72 hours to request another sample taken be tested. "NASCAR has a strict drug testing program that Penske Racing fully supports. Penske Racing will work with NASCAR through this process and its next steps," the team said in a statement. The team was scrambling to get Sam Hornish Jr. to the track in time to take Allmendinger's seat.

Hornish is running in a full-time Nationwide Series schedule this year. He'll have to qualify on speed in both Cup races.

PCR will consider Ragan "and others" for the No. 22 car next season. Michael Waltrip Racing driver David Reutimann and Red Bull Racing Brian Vickers are other drivers that could be considered. Driver Sam Hornish Jr. will not be under consideration.
