Redskins | HC explains decision on Ryan Torain

Tue, 27 Dec 2011 19:17:55 -0800

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan explained the decision to released RB Ryan Torain Tuesday, Dec. 27. "What you look for is consistency at every position," Shanahan said. "The people that are consistent get more opportunities. If you're not consistent, you don't get as many opportunities to show us what you can do. But you mentioned Ryan had a big game - that was one of the reasons he's had a chance to get some reps. I think (RB Roy Helu Jr.) has taken advantage of those opportunities more than Ryan has. (RB Evan Royster) obviously this week against a pretty good defensive front - took advantage of an opportunity."

Redskins | Reluctant to start Roy Helu

Tue, 22 Nov 2011 12:41:58 -0800

The Washington Redskins have been reluctant to start RB Roy Helu Jr. over RB Ryan Torain, despite the fact that Torain has just 71 yards in the last six games, compared to Helu's 122. "I like Helu. He's doing some great things," head coach Mike Shanahan said. "I don't want to put too much pressure on him too early. He's not ready for that. But he's gaining experience, and I like what I see." Torain started in Week 11 against the Dallas Cowboys, but Helu and RB Tashard Choice saw plenty of work.

Shanahan isn't tipping his hand as to which running back will start in Week 12, but the team has started to roll with veteran players in the starting lineup recently. Shanahan doesn't want to rush Helu, but Torain isn't making the most of his opportunities to start games as the leading back.

Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain had a poor stat line in Week 8 against the Buffalo Bills, posting 14 yards on eight carries. The lack of production can mostly be attributed to poor run blocking by the offensive line, as three or more defenders were on the Redskins side of the line on six of his eight rushing attempts.

Redskins | Ryan Torain starting

Sun, 16 Oct 2011 09:59:13 -0700

Contrary to previous reports, Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain will start in Week 6, with Roy Helu Jr. as the backup ahead of Tim Hightower. Washington will ride the hot backfield hand.

Fantasy Tip: Regardless of what has been reported, Torain is the best fantasy play in this backfield. His power style is a mismatch for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Sun, 16 Oct 2011 08:44:32 -0700

Fantasy Tip: Mike Shanahan continues to play games with fantasy football players. We still anticipate Ryan Torain playing a large role today against the Eagles. Hightower may only be starting in name, but this just continues to show how volatile the Washington backfield is. Use caution.
