Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans OL Jason Mathews has accepted a job at Montgomery Bell Academy, where he'll become associate dean of the 11th and 12th grade and also assist with the school's football program. He's walking away after an eleven-year NFL career, the last seven with the Titans. He said he probably won't file official retirement papers until next year.

Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans OT Jason Mathews acknowledges that with the club investing three draft choices at the offensive tackle position this year, his future is uncertain and he could be forced to retire. ''I am in the 90 percent range of retiring and enjoying the rest of my life, but the cautious person in me wants to hold off for a little bit before making that total commitment,'' Mathews said. ''But if I really wanted to play this year it was going to be with somebody like the Titans, and I don't think with three draft picks, unless something changes dramatically, I don't think I am go to be with the Titans next year.'' Making matters worse, during the team's recent minicamp, rookie OT David Stewart wore Mathews' No. 76 jersey.

Bush Thursday, May 27, while the president was at the Nashville International Airport preparing to visit the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital and attend a private fund-raiser. "I told him the Titans were supporters and I gave him (a) jersey," Mathews said after meeting Bush. "I told him that I appreciate your leadership and your faith, and I told him thank you for making our country safer." Mathews called the opportunity "the highest individual honor that I have received."

Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans QB Steve McNair rewarded his offensive lineman Wednesday, May 19, for their play in helping the quarterback win co-MVP and Pro Bowl honors for 2003. McNair presented Titans OLT Brad Hopkins, ORT Fred Miller, OLG Zach Piller, ORG Benji Olson, C Justin Hartwig and backup OT Jason Mathews all 42-inch Sanyo plasma televisions, along with Cartier watches. "He thanked us for the season that we had," Miller said. "He thanked us for protecting him and said if it wasn't for us it wouldn't have been possible for him. The guy is always giving everyone else credit, he is definitely a team player. That is what makes you want to go out there and fight and give the extra effort for guys like him."

Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans OT Jason Mathews (wrist) had an MRI Tuesday, August 12. The results were not immediately available. Mathews had an X-Ray recently and it showed he doesn't have a broken bone. Mathews has been in pain for several weeks, and suspected there might be ligament damage.

The Tennesseean reports the Tennessee Titans rotated their offensive line in some drills this week, but head coach Jeff Fisher has not committed to making any changes for Sunday’s game. LG Bruce Matthews worked at center and Zach Piller worked at left guard. Jason Mathews also got some work at right guard in place of Fred Miller.

The Tennessean reports Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher said DT Josh Evans (hip), G Zach Piller (shoulder), WR Justin McCareins (calf), G Chris Valletta (shoulder) and OT Jason Mathews (groin) should all be back on the practice field this week and should have a chance to play against the Bears this weekend. DE Kevin Carter (groin) and CB Samari Rolle (hip) look an additional week away from returning. The team is hopeful they will be back for the St. Louis pre-season game on August 17.

The team's official site reports Tennessee Titans DE Keith Embray tore his tricep and is expected to be out four to six months. G Zach Piller injured his shoulder and sprained his AC joint. He will be evaluated day-to-day. G Gennaro Dinapoli (virus) missed practice today, but he's expected back Friday. OT Jason Mathews strained his groin and will not take part in Saturday's scrimmage. OT Ian Rafferty (strained calf) will miss one to two weeks. WR Michael Snowden (strained hamstring) will miss two weeks.

The Tennessean's Paul Kuharsky reports Titans backup OL Jason Mathews extended his contract to help the team free up cap space to sign DE Kevin Carter. Mathews was scheduled to earn a $750,000 base salary this year, the last year of his contract, and would have counted $787,500 against the cap. A new deal that runs through 2004 helped the team clear about $210,000 in 2001 cap room. He will collect a signing bonus of $250,000 and then be set for base salaries of $477,000 this season, $750,000 in 2002, $850,000 in 2003 and $950,000 in 2004. DE Jevon Kearse was very happy the team added Carter to their defensive line mix. QB Billy Volek has done all the throwing in the Titans work on the field this week. QB Steve McNair is rehabbing his shoulder and QB Neil O'Donnell is not in town yet.

The Tennessean reports DB Anthony Dorsett will start in place of S Marcus Robertson for the Tennessee Titans this weekend. Robertson, who was involved in an automobile accident this week, did not make the trip for this weekend's game. The Titans named Robertson, WR Joey Kent, T Jason Mathews and LB Phil Glover inactive for this week's game against the Steelers.
