The Buffalo Bills may still use their franchise tag on WR Stevie Johnson, but they are going to wait until the last day the tag can be used (March 5) before they make a decision on what to do with their unrestricted free-agent receiver. Bills general manager Buddy Nix, during an appearance on WGR Sports radio 550 Thursday, March 1, said the team doesn't need to make a decision until March 5 and that's when they will make it.

The Bills are talking with Johnson about a long-term extension, and Nix hopes the two sides can get it done before March 5 to avoid using the tag. "As long as we're talking we've got a chance," Nix said.

He was benched in Week 17 after a touchdown, when he pulled up his jersey to expose the written words "Happy New Year." It marked the second time this season - and third time in two year - Johnson has been flagged for a touchdown celebration. "I mean, you love what Stevie does on the field before he scores touchdowns, you know? So you just have to decide if he can and we can get that under control." Johnson led the team with 76 catches, 1,004 yards and seven touchdowns, and he is looking for a new contract. Negotiations between the two sides broke down in November.
