"There's a lot of time and a lot of decisions that need to be made on both sides, to be honest with you, on how we'll move forward."

Johnson's agent was asked if his client would test the free agent waters. "Far too early for that," the agent said Friday, Jan. 27. "The Bills have options. They can use the franchise tag on him, they can negotiate an extension, or they can let him walk. It is no secret where Stevie's heart is, but at the same time he has to do what is best for his family." Johnson has said he wants to remain with the team.

"I don't think he would intentionally do something to hurt our team, I really don't. He's not a criminal. He made a mistake. It cost us. And he paid the price. That's behind us. He was benched in Week 17 after a touchdown, when he pulled up his jersey to expose the written words "Happy New Year." It marked the second time this season - and third time in two year - Johnson has been flagged for a touchdown celebration. "I mean, you love what Stevie does on the field before he scores touchdowns, you know? So you just have to decide if he can and we can get that under control." Johnson led the team with 76 catches, 1,004 yards and seven touchdowns, and he is looking for a new contract. Negotiations between the two sides broke down in November.
