The receiver also doesn't expect the club to use the franchise tag to keep him, according to a person familiar with the discussions. Johnson led the team in receiving each of the past two seasons, and is set to become an unrestricted free agent March 13. The Bills haven't used the franchise tag since 2006.

The Bills submitted a proposal over a week ago and Johnson's agent, C.J. LaBoy, countered the team's offer Monday, Feb. 13, according to the source.

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent WR Stevie Johnson said he hopes to re-sign with the team in the offseason; however, he views his pending free agency as a good option. "Of course I'm hoping Buffalo will step up," Johnson said. "But if not and I hit the market in free agency, then Buffalo is in the picture no matter what. But to be in free agency to see what other teams are saying, that's also good." C.J. Laboy, Johnson's agent, said he is optimistic as talks continue with the Bills. "We all know where Stevie's heart is and that's a big reason why he's engrained himself in the Buffalo community as much as he has," Laboy said. "There's a lot of time and a lot of decisions that need to be made on both sides, to be honest with you, on how we'll move forward."

There has been no direct dialogue between the Buffalo Bills and WR Stevie Johnson, who is a soon-to-be unrestricted free agent as of March 13. Johnson's agent was asked if his client would test the free agent waters. "Far too early for that," the agent said Friday, Jan. 27. "The Bills have options. They can use the franchise tag on him, they can negotiate an extension, or they can let him walk. It is no secret where Stevie's heart is, but at the same time he has to do what is best for his family." Johnson has said he wants to remain with the team.

Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix said he would like to bring back impending free-agent WR Stevie Johnson. Nix added Johnson's antics will not affect whether the team re-signs him. "He fits in, we do want him back, and I know that you think about the antics, penalties and obviously we're not happy about that," Nix said. "I don't think he would intentionally do something to hurt our team, I really don't. He's not a criminal. He made a mistake. It cost us. And he paid the price. That's behind us. He may do it again and if he does we'll deal with it. That doesn't affect what we're trying to get done with him."
