The Miami Dolphins have not offered a tender to restricted free-agent RB Lex Hilliard, a sixth-round pick from 2008, making him an unrestricted free agent. Hilliard started four games for the Dolphins last season, carrying the ball 16 times for 41 yards and a touchdown. He also had five receptions for 49 yards and played on special teams. The Dolphins may try to re-sign him to a cheaper deal.

Miami Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard has gotten a first down on all seven third-down opportunities he has been given this season. Head coach Tony Sparano said Hilliard is built to be successful in short yardage situations. Hilliard likely will not see his role increase this season with RBs Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas on the roster.

Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post, reports Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said he has reached a point with RB Lex Hilliard that if he is the best option to start for the team in Week 17, it's not a problem. "The progression with Lex the last couple weeks has been really good," Sparano said. "I feel really comfortable with Lex. It's been good we've been able to see him that way." RB Ricky Williams (shoulder) remains questionable for Week 17.

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports University of Montana RB Lex Hilliard worked out at his school's Pro Day Wednesday, March 19. Hilliard ran a 4.66 40-yard dash, had a 36 1/2-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot, three-inch long jump, a 4.03-second short shuttle and a 6.93-second cone drill. He measured in at 5-foot-11 1/4 and 234 pounds.
