Thu, 09 May 2013 09:13:01 -0700 A NASCAR appeals panel eased some of the penalties handed out to Joe Gibbs Racing for having an illegal part in driver Matt Kenseth's race-winning engine at Kansas Speedway last month. The team never disputed that the part was illegal, but they argued that the penalties enforced by NASCAR were too steep because they leased their engines from Toyota Racing Development and aren't permitted to touch anything inside of them. Toyota accepted the responsibility and insisted that one light rod didn't give Kenseth an advantage. The points deducted from Kenseth were reduced from 50 to 12, which moves him from 11th in the standings to fourth. The panel also gave him the three bonus points he earned for the win.

Crew chief Jason Ratcliff was suspended six races and fined $200,000. Kenseth also lost three bonus points he earned for winning the race, and his pole position for the race was rescinded. Fantasy Tip: Fortunately for fantasy owners that had Kenseth in their lineups last weekend at Kansas, none of these penalties will affect you. The victory still counts for fantasy purposes.
