It's all about business." He said when his grandfather, Lee Petty, used to race it was 90 percent sport and 10 percent business comparing it to playing pick up games in your front yard. He also said NASCAR nowadays is 90-95 percent business. Petty stated that NASCAR may be losing fans and needs to work on the on-track product. He also mentioned criticizing the sport of NASCAR will not do it any justice. "Hey, man, it's 2008," he said. "We're all sitting here with big sponsors, the 50th running of the Daytona 500, it's all positive. I don't think we need to be looking back. We need to be looking forward to the next 50 years of what the Daytona 500 will be and where the sport will go. And that model is going to change, but if we keep reaching back, we're going to keep being negative about it. We have to reach forward and be positive about it."
