He's hoping to reach a plea bargain in his case that doesn't include jail time on 19 felony charges. His first step on returning will be to enter NASCAR's Road to Recovery program.

"Well, Jeremy, you know the path back for you," NASCAR chairman Brian France said. "It's the path back for anybody. I've always hoped that you would choose the right path and not litigation and a bunch of other things. But that's up to you."

Mayfield has denied using methamphetamines in interviews and court documents.
