Tue, 01 Jul 2008 14:00:53 -0700 The Associated Press reports Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates co-owner Chip Ganassi shut down driver Dario Franchitti's team because of a lack of sponsorship. Franchitti is 41st in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series overall point standings after missing several races this season. He missed five races because of a broken ankle and he failed to qualify for two other races. His best finish this season was 22nd. " If I keep going I run the risk of dragging the other two teams down. I don't want to do that," Ganassi said. "There's no money. It makes no sense to be running this out of my pocket. I had to put a stop to it." Ganassi said Franchitti was disappointed but understood why he shut the team down and hopes that Franchitti will drive their Nationwide Series entry. Crew chief Steven Lane is still with CGR.

Franchitti injured his ankle in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Talladega Superspeedway and has a slight ankle fracture, according to Dr. Kevin Scheid. Franchitti will be fitted with a carbon fiber ankle brace. Chip Ganassi Racing officials said Franchitti will be evaluated on a week-by-week basis.

The National Weather Service reports there is a 60 percent chance of rain after 8 p.m. Qualifying is scheduled for 3:40 p.m. EDT. Drivers outside the top 35 in owner's points that would qualify are Jamie McMurray, Bill Elliott, Dave Blaney, Dario Franchitti, Aric Almirola, Kyle Petty, Joe Nemechek and Ken Schrader. There are 47 team's entered to compete in the Goody's Cool Orange 500, which means four will not qualify. Drivers that would miss the race are Mike Skinner, John Andretti, Patrick Carpentier and Tony Raines, if qualifying was cancelled. The forecast is clear for race day.
