Michael Waltrip Racing driver Brian Vickers posted a runner-up finish at the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway Sunday, July 6. He was frustrated that NASCAR made the call to end the rain-shortened race. "Knowing that we weren't even supposed to start the race last night until 7 p.m., I was shocked that we called it at 2-something in the afternoon," Vickers said. "I know a lot of fans turned into the TV and stuck around at the racetrack waiting to see a finish, and I was expecting them to wait a little bit longer knowing that we have lights here and it was going to be a night race anyway."
Fantasy Tip: Despite his disappointment with the call of the race, he still turned in his third Top 5 of the season, and best result of the year. He is now 16th in the overall points standings, and has re-emerged as a solid fantasy option at most tracks.

Michael Waltrip Racing driver Brian Vickers (calf) is no longer using blood thinners and plans to race in a full Sprint Cup schedule in 2014, starting with the Daytona 500. He missed the final five races last season after a blood clot was discovered in his right calf in October. He missed the final 25 races in 2015 because of blood clots and heart surgery. Vickers must be medically cleared before returning to racing. Aaron's will be the full-time sponsor for Vickers' No. 55 Toyota all season.

Michael Waltrip Racing driver Brian Vickers (calf) will miss the rest of the Sprint Cup season due to a blood clot in his right calf. He was put on blood-thinning medication that will keep him from racing. Vickers also missed the final 25 races in 2010 with blood clots that required surgery. "If there's anything to be positive about with today's news it's that this is only a temporary setback," Vickers said. "The timing for this is never good, but I'm glad we'll get it out of the way now and be ready to run for a championship with the Aaron's Dream Machine in 2014."

Stewart-Haas Racing announced Monday, Aug. 19, that driver Tony Stewart (leg) will officially miss the remainder of the Sprint Cup season after missing the last two races with a broken right tibia and fibula. Driver Mark Martin will replace Stewart in the No. 14 Chevrolet for 12 of the final 13 races, beginning this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. Driver Austin Dillon will drive for the team at Talladega Superspeedway. Martin has been given his release from Michael Waltrip Racing and the No. 55 car, where he was scheduled to drive 10 of the final 13 races. Driver Brian Vickers, who will take over full time in the car next year, will drive those races. Stewart is expected to return for preseason testing in January. Stewart's No. 14 car is 13th in owners points, 10 out of the top 10.

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin (back) is planning on starting the Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway this weekend for his first race since suffering a compression fracture in his lower back March 24 at Auto Club Speedway. Hamlin has been cleared "just to start" this weekend, meaning he will drop back to the back of the pack and ride around until the first caution and then give way to driver Brian Vickers. He will collect all the points for whatever place Vickers earns just by starting the race. Hamlin is currently 71 points outside the top 20 in points. Hamlin will have another scan on his spine next week and must be cleared to drive at Darlington before making a full return. He will consider having surgery in the offseason to fix his injury and other back problems he's had over the years.
Fantasy Tip: Obviously, this weekend is not the time to start Hamlin on your fantasy team. Next weekend probably isn't, either, if he gets full clearance to race. It's safer to hold off and make sure he's completely healthy and at top form before throwing him back into your lineup.
