Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles was a stud in his return from knee surgery, gaining over 1,500 yards on the ground. While RB Peyton Hillis, an unrestricted free agent, is not likely to be back. However, FB Nate Eachus and RB Shaun Draughn provide some decent depth, as well as RB Cyrus Gray. New head coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey aren't expected to have to tinker much with this position.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Peyton Hillis engaged in a war of words with former teammate Cleveland Browns LT Joe Thomas. Thomas criticized Hillis for creating a "toxic" situation and a "terrible distraction" during his final season in Cleveland, marred by a contract dispute. Hillis missed a game with strep throat and five others with a hamstring injury, and Thomas accused Hillis of refusing to play because of his contract situation. "Joe Thomas, he can have his opinions all he wants," Hillis said. "He's kind of like a crazy ex-girlfriend. It's been over a year. Get over it."

The Kansas City Chiefs plan to continue to pound the ball on the ground, regardless of who their quarterback is under center. They ran the ball 49 times compared to 19 pass plays in their Week 5 loss, and they rank second in the league in rushing. RB Jamaal Charles leads the league with 551 yards and is tied for third with 102 attempts. RB Shaun Draughn carried the ball 12 times and RB Cyrus Gray had four carries last week. RB Peyton Hillis (ankle) will be involved, too, when he returns from injury.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Peyton Hillis had just seven carries for 16 yards in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, and he added three catches for eight yards. Hillis had just one more touch than RB Shaun Draughn, a preseason sensation. Draughn managed six carries for 29 yards and a score, while added two catches for 12 yards.
Fantasy Tip: It's too early to totally pull the plug on Hillis in fantasy leagues, especially with Jamaal Charles (knee) having just one game under his belt after returning from a torn ACL. However, Hillis is not worth starting in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills in any format.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel loves RB Jamaal Charles' speed and RB Peyton Hillis' power, and he plans to use both backs often in Week 1. However, Crennel added the flow of the game will dictate which back sees more time. "Just how we feel, how it's going," Crennel said when asked if he has a carry-split plan for Charles and Hillis. "And, that's totally honest with you. You can't say how a game is going to go. We go up there and we work all these hours at night and we put a game plan together, but if a play is not working, then you don't keep calling that play. So, whatever is working, that's what we're going to call, and that's why many times you look at that offensive call sheet that has so many plays on it because if they're not working, then you've got something else to go to."
Fantasy Tip: Owners must take a wait-and-see approach when it comes to the Chiefs' backfield as Charles and Hillis will likely split carries for now. If Charles can prove he is all the way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, however, he should emerge as the lead back. Consider both backs as RB2 options for Week 1.

The Kansas City Chiefs are built to run the football in 2012. During the offseason, their three major additions - OL Eric Winston, RB Peyton Hillis and TE Kevin Boss - were aimed at helping the running game. Hillis should give the team a strong balance to RB Jamaal Charles (knee). If the Chiefs are able to get the football in the hands of Charles and Hillis at least 500 times this year, it should lead to a successful season.
"He's bringing power, explosiveness, he's strong, he's going to catch the ball, he's got great hands. I feel he's an all-around player like me, so I feel like we can move the ball," Charles said of Hillis, while noting he believes the two will make a good combination. "When you have a guy in there that you know is just as good, if not a lot better than you are, that's really good too," Hillis said.

That's what I'm going to do, and whatever role they're going to give me, I'm going to try to be good at it and try to succeed," Hillis said. Hillis could see time at fullback this season.

The Kansas City Chiefs planned to target RB Peyton Hillis when the free-agent market opened, according to general manager Scott Pioli. "One of our goals going into free agency this year was to build depth at the running back position and we are pleased to add a talented player like Peyton to the mix," Pioli added. Head coach Romeo Crennel said Hillis is a "big, strong, physical back with a lot of talent and he should fit into our system well. We are looking forward to working with him and adding him into our offense."
