Tue, 01 May 2007 15:15:18 -0700

Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney, during an interview on "The Afternoon Blitz" on SIRIUS NFL Radio, said the Panthers were fortunate enough to land WR Dwayne Jarrett and WR Ryne Robinson during the NFL Draft, which made it easier to part ways with WR Keyshawn Johnson. Hurney noted the team feels they have a group of young receivers who are able to develop through a lot of time and reps. While noting Johnson was everything they hoped he would be when they signed him, Hurney noted the team made a decision it was time to give their younger players time to develop. He added Johnson was a little surprised but understands the reasons behind his release. Hurney said financial considerations did not play a part in the release.

Earlier this year, Johnson had stated he'd only play for Carolina if offensive coordinator Dan Henning was retained. Henning was fired earlier this week. "I don't know, man," Johnson said. "There's so much bull that goes along with the NFL. This is one of the toughest calls I've ever had to make. I could play until I'm 40. But I've always felt like that in the offseason, if I start to feel like maybe it isn't for me, then maybe it's time to say, `Never mind.' " Johnson added that he will not participate in learning a new offensive system in Charlotte. "I'm a California guy. My kids (ages 11 and 8, they live with Johnson's ex-wife) are here. You ask me to come in there in March -- nope. You're taking valuable time away from me and my kids," Johnson said.
