Browns | Expected to pursue WR in free agency

The Cleveland Browns are expected to pursue a big-play wide receiver in free agency, especially since the class will be particularly deep. There might be dozens of receivers on the open market March 13 such as San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson and Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson, whom current general manager Tom Heckert drafted in 2008 when he was with the Eagles. Super Bowl hero WR Mario Manningham of the New York Giants is a native of Warren, Ohio, and he might be a potential target if he isn't re-signed.

The Philadelphia Eagles could place the franchise tag on impending free-agent WR DeSean Jackson and then begin to explore trade options. The team could also place the tag and let Jackson play with them in 2012 before signing a long-term deal. However, there is no way the Eagles will simply let Jackson walk as a free agent.

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson apologized following Week 17 for letting his contract situation become a distraction this season and said he'd be OK if the team used its franchise tag on him if the sides can't agree to a contract extension this offseason. "I can admit to certain things affecting me during the season. I just want to apologize," Jackson said. "I probably could have handled it a little bit different, but now sitting here after the season's over I can just say I was able to put it behind me and really just fight for my teammates, fight for my organization."

Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson had five receptions for 90 yards in Week 16 against the Dallas Cowboys, and he also carried twice for 27 yards. Jackson's 90 receiving yards were his most since Week 4 when he posted a season-best 171 yards against the San Francisco 49ers.
