Falcons | Curtis Lofton seen as liability in third-down situations

Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan wants to remove LB Curtis Lofton out of the team's "sub" third-down coverage schemes, as he is seen as a liability in third-down situations. Re-signing the superb two-down linebacker is a priority for the team, however. Lofton is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent March 13.

Falcons | Curtis Lofton likely to be paid well

The team for free-agent LB Curtis Lofton (Falcons) is likely to point to the four-year, $36 million deal signed last August by New York Jets LB David Harris as a comparable deal for their client. It's uncertain if the Falcons will bring Lofton back at such a price. However, in each of his four seasons, Lofton has recorded more than 100 tackles, so his departure would leave a huge hole for the defense.

Atlanta Falcons LB Curtis Lofton was named the NFC's Defensive Player of the Week by the NFL Wednesday, Jan. 4. "I'm pretty excited about it," Lofton said. He posted 14 tackles, including one stop for a loss, to go along with a 26-yard interception return for score.
