Panthers | Carolina running backs improved

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 16:21:50 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne has lost about 10 pounds since last season, while RB Brandon Wegher is playing faster. Both seem ready to take more playing time away from RB Jonathan Stewart.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart will start as long as he's healthy, but good health sometimes eludes Stewart. Artis-Payne is a better prospect than Wegher, though, and is worth a late-round selection in fantasy drafts this summer.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart has big cap hit

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 12:27:27 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart carries a cap hit of $9.55 million to go with his base salary of $5 million in 2016. The Panthers would save $4 million in salary cap space if they released Stewart by June 1, but they are still expected to keep him.

Fantasy Tip: Carolina is comfortable enough with their salary cap that keeping Stewart isn't a big issue. There is still the possibility that he is released, but that seems highly unlikely, especially with the lack of quality depth behind Stewart. Keep him in your RB2 rankings for next season's drafts.

Panthers | Carolina not expected to add Matt Forte

Sun, 14 Feb 2016 10:41:15 -0800

Chicago Bears impending free-agent RB Matt Forte likely will not be an option for the Carolina Panthers this offseason unless the team decides to release RB Jonathan Stewart.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart played well when he was healthy this past season and probably will return to the team, which means Forte will sign with another team. Stewart could be considered a No. 2 running back in some leagues next season, while Forte's value will depend on his new team.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart returns to Super Bowl

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 16:38:13 -0800

Updating an ongoing story, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) returned to Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Feb. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Whatever Stewart did to his foot, it isn't serious enough to keep him off the field. With that in mind, it is unlikely the injury would have any long-term impact on Stewart.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart has foot injury

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 16:19:44 -0800

Updating a previous story, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) exited Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos with a left foot injury and is questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: If Stewart can't return to the game, look for Fozzy Whittaker and Mike Tolbert to see plenty of work.

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (leg) limped off in the first quarter of Super Bowl 50, favoring his left leg.

Fantasy Tip: Stay tuned for updates on Stewart. If it happens to be a serious injury, it could linger into next season.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart back to practice

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 13:40:57 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle), who missed practice all of last week, was back on the practice field Monday, Feb. 1.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers are just being cautious with J-Stew ahead of the big game. He should be fine to play. He'll face another tough defensive front in the Denver Broncos, but if Stewart was able to put up 100 yards on the Seattle Seahawks, you can't count him out for another big performance.

Panthers | Three Panthers RBs questionable

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 10:10:06 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) and RB Mike Tolbert (knee) and RB Fozzy Whittaker (ankle) are listed as questionable for the Super Bowl. Stewart and Tolbert didn't practice Friday, Jan. 29, while Whittaker was limited.

Fantasy Tip: All three should be good to go, and Stewart will lead the way. He'll have a pivotal role against the Denver Broncos to keep their devastating pass rush honest.

Panthers | Two Panthers backs ease in

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 08:33:31 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (rest) and RB Mike Tolbert (knee) did little-to-no work at practice Friday, Jan. 29, but RB Fozzy Whittaker (ankle) returned to practice.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart figures to see a prominent role in the Super Bowl, and the team is being cautious with him with the game more than a week away.

Panthers | Three Panthers RBs sit out again

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 09:15:22 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (rest), RB Mike Tolbert (knee) and RB Fozzy Whittaker (ankle) were out of practice again Thursday, Jan. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart had a solid showing with 83 yards rushing in the NFC Championship, and they'll need him to open up other areas of their offense in the Super Bowl.

Panthers | Three Panthers RBs not practicing

Wed, 27 Jan 2016 09:22:14 -0800

Carolina Panthers RBs Jonathan Stewart (rest), Fozzy Whittaker (ankle) and Mike Tolbert (knee) are not practicing Wednesday, Jan. 27, and RBs Cameron Artis-Payne and Brandon Wegher are seeing most of the work.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers have plenty of time to practice, so they're just resting some of their banged up players early in the week. J-Stew has had a very productive year despite missing time at the end of the regular season with an injury. He had two touchdowns and over 100 yards in the divisional round and 83 yards last week against the Arizona Cardinals. The Denver Broncos are a tough squad to run against, but the presence of Cam Newton could open some big holes for Stewart to exploit.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart has special streak

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 09:53:21 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart has rushed for at least 50 yards in 16 straight games, which is the NFL's longest active streak.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) became the first running back to go for over 100 yards against the Seattle Seahawks last week, so we know he's healthy after missing the last four weeks of the regular season with an ankle injury. It won't be easy against the Arizona Cardinals, but you should have confidence in J-Stew on FantasyScore.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart probable

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 08:58:58 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is probable for the NFC Championship game Sunday, Jan. 24, against the Arizona Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: J-Stew ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) is one of the higher-end RBs left, but he has a tough matchup on FantasyScore.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart limited Thursday

Thu, 21 Jan 2016 11:43:38 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday, Jan. 21, and head coach Ron Rivera said Stewart "looked pretty good." Rivera said Stewart is expected to play in the NFC Championship against the Arizona Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: J-Stew ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) will be fine against the Cardinals and is a fine choice on FantasyScore, coming off the first 100-yard rushing game against the Seattle Seahawks last week.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart practicing

Thu, 21 Jan 2016 09:27:09 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is returning to practice Thursday, Jan. 21, after taking a veteran day off Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) will be fine to play, but the Panthers are taking a cautious approach so that he doesn't incur a setback. He became the first running back to run for over 100 yards against the Seattle Seahawks, so you have to like him moving forward against the Arizona Cardinals.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart faces stiff D

Wed, 20 Jan 2016 20:06:38 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart will face the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24. The Cardinals ranked sixth in the NFL against the rush in the regular season, giving up just 91.2 yards per game with nine touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) rolled for 106 yards and two touchdowns last weekend against a strong Seattle Seahawks defense, so he can be trusted by FantasyScore owners this week despite another touch matchup.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart expects to be ready

Wed, 20 Jan 2016 14:36:21 -0800

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) expects to be ready for the NFC Championship Sunday, Jan. 24, after tweaking his ankle in the second half of the divisional round last weekend. Head coach Ron Rivera said the team is easing him back into action. Stewart rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns in the win over the Seattle Seahawks and became the first rusher to go for over 100 yards against Seattle this year. The Panthers have rushed for 100-plus yards in 30 straight games, including the playoffs.

Fantasy Tip: The Seahawks were the toughest fantasy matchup for running backs this year. So if J-Stew ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) was able to conquer them, there's no reason he can't put up respectable numbers against the Cardinals, too.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart won't be rushed back

Wed, 20 Jan 2016 13:11:57 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot, ankle) will be eased back into action, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: As reported earlier, Stewart ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) did not practice today. If he continues to miss practice this week then he could be at least limited for the NFC Championship game against the Arizona Cardinals. If Stewart doesn't get a full practice in this week, he could be a risky FantasyScore play.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart idle Wednesday

Wed, 20 Jan 2016 08:20:45 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot, ankle) is out of practice Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Fantasy Tip: J-Stew ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) is among the top RBs left, but it's worth debating if you want to dump that much of your cap on him against the Arizona Cardinals on FantasyScore.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart sore, but OK

Mon, 18 Jan 2016 09:51:31 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) is sore, but there's no major concern Monday, Jan. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart will be in the midrange of the running backs left in the pool when he faces the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart surpasses 100-yard mark

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 14:24:05 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries in the divisional round playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday, Jan. 17.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart posted his third 100-yard game of the season and has four touchdowns in his last three games. Stewart should see plenty of work against the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship game and could be a solid starting option in fantasy leagues.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart has big first half

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 11:47:41 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart ran for 84 yards and two touchdowns in the first half of the divisional playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday, Jan. 17.

Fantasy Tip: It was a dominating first half for the Panthers, who went into the locker room up 31-0. Stewart could continue to see plenty of work in an attempt to drain the clock and keep Seattle off the field.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart active Sunday

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 09:06:52 -0800

Confirming previous reports, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) is active for the NFC divisional-round game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) missed the final four games of the regular season and does not have a favorable matchup against the Seattle defense. He is not a recommended option in FantasyScore this week.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart a full-go

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 09:57:17 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) is practicing fully again Thursday, Jan. 14.

Fantasy Tip: J-Stew ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) doesn't have a great matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, but he should be rested and is a RB2 consideration on FantasyScore.

Panthers | No limitations for J-Stew, Ginn

Wed, 13 Jan 2016 11:45:52 -0800

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said there are no limitations for RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) and WR Ted Ginn Jr. (knee) this week, and both will play against the Seattle Seahawks this weekend. Both players were taken off the injury report Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Fantasy Tip: It's good news for the Panthers, but both Stewart ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) and Ginn ($6,700) are in for a tough matchup against the Seahawks. Both are bust candidates. Make sure to temper expectations, especially for Stewart, who missed the final four regular season games.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart, Ted Ginn strong

Wed, 13 Jan 2016 10:47:03 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said WR Ted Ginn Jr. (knee) is looking fast in practice Wednesday, Jan. 13, and that RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) is looking strong.

Fantasy Tip: Both Ginn ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) and Stewart ($6,700) are expected to be fine to face the Seattle Seahawks, but both are bust candidates in daily formats. This divisional round matchup figures to be dominated by defense, and Stewart is even more risky after missing the last three weeks.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart returns to practice

Wed, 13 Jan 2016 08:59:47 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) returned to practice Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Fantasy Tip: J-Stew ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) has a tough draw against the Seattle Seahawks, but he'll be an RB2 consideration on FantasyScore.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart, Ted Ginn will practice

Mon, 11 Jan 2016 09:42:48 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) and WR Ted Ginn Jr. (knee) will both be on the practice field Wednesday, Jan. 13, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Both Stewart and Ginn missed Week 17 but are expected to play against the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round. RB Fozzy Whittaker (ankle) is a question mark.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Stewart nor Ginn will be popular daily picks in the divisional round against a stout Seahawks defense. Stewart is especially unattractive coming off an injury against the toughest defense for fantasy players against the run this season.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart, Ted Ginn limited

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 11:05:42 -0800

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) and WR Ted Ginn Jr. (knee) were both limited at practice Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Both players did conditioning drills on the side Tuesday. With an extra week to rest, you'd expect that both Stewart and Ginn would be ready to go in the divisional round. It's unknown who the Panthers will play, so their value on FantasyScore is still a bit up in the air. Stewart is the bigger question mark with his injury.

Panthers | Three Panthers sit out of practice

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 10:31:53 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) and WR Ted Ginn Jr. (knee) were conditioning but did not practice Wednesday, Jan. 6. RB Fozzy Whittaker (ankle) also didn't practice but is out of his walking boot.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers have an extra week of rest to heal up, so all three of these players could be available for the divisional round. Whittaker is the biggest question mark. Stay tuned on their status as the week progresses.

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) is out of practice Wednesday, Jan. 6. The team hopes he'll be ready to practice Monday, Jan. 11, after the first-round bye.

Fantasy Tip: J-Stew could be a midrange RB to consider if he's back for the divisional round next week.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart, Fozzy Whittaker out

Fri, 01 Jan 2016 12:26:08 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) and RB Fozzy Whittaker (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, Jan. 1, and have been ruled out for the Week 17 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: Cameron Artis-Payne ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) probably will receive most of the carries against the Buccaneers. He has had some success in his limited playing time this season and could be a cheaper option for owners on FantasyScore.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart sits Wednesday

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 06:25:22 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) is out of practice Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) still has time to return for Week 17, but what's the point with the team 14-1 and locked into the top seed in the playoffs? Cameron Artis-Payne ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) could be a dynamite grab on FantasyScore against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart could return

Tue, 29 Dec 2015 10:25:59 -0800

The Carolina Panthers are hopeful that RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) can return in Week 17 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Stewart ran on a treadmill and could practice Wednesday, Dec. 30, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Fozzy Whittaker is already ruled out for Week 17 for the Panthers, so returning Stewart ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) would be a big bonus. Even if J-Stew plays, though, he could be limited in his role, meaning Cameron Artis-Payne ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) would be an intriguing sleeper flex play either way.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart out for Week 16

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 10:13:47 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) will not play in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: Cameron Artis-Payne ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) looks to be a solid low-end flyer on FantasyScore this week. He had 14 carries for 59 yards and two catches for 34 yards last week.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart may sit out until playoffs

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 12:14:38 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) looks like he'll sit out his second straight game in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Ron Rivera said he's comfortable letting Stewart rest the final two weeks of the regular season so that he's ready for the playoffs, and Rivera is comfortable with using RB Cameron Artis-Payne. Stewart is not practicing but is out of his protective boot.

Fantasy Tip: You won't be able to use Stewart ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) in your fantasy championship tilt this weekend. Artis-Payne ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) should see most of the work in his absence, and he's a very attractive flex play on FantasyScore. The Falcons allow the third-most PPR fantasy points (29.8) per game to running backs.

Panthers | No practice for Jonathan Stewart

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 12:09:39 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) did not practice Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Fantasy Tip: All signs point to J-Stew ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) sitting out his second straight game, so plan to be without him. The Panthers aren't rushing him back despite trying to go undefeated in the regular season. Cameron Artis-Payne ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) and Fozzy Whittaker ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) should split the load again, with Artis-Payne being more attractive as a nice sleeper pick against an Atlanta Falcons team that loves to give up points to running backs.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart officially out

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 11:27:14 -0800

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera confirmed that RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) will not play in Week 15 against the New York Giants.

Fantasy Tip: Without J-Stew, Fozzy Whittaker ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is expected to have the first shot at lead duties, but Mike Tolbert ($2,000) and Cameron Artis-Payne may factor in, as well. Whittaker and Tolbert are acceptable deep sleepers on FantasyScore, but you may want to avoid the situation altogether in traditional formats.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart likely out

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 11:08:34 -0800

Updating earlier reports, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) is "more than likely out" for Week 15, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: We'll likely have a Fozzy Whittaker ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) sighting against the New York Giants. He doesn't have a ton of upside, but you can't go wrong with a starting RB as a $2,000 flex on FantasyScore. Mike Tolbert and Cameron Artis-Payne could mix in, but Whittaker would likely see more work.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart iffy this week

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 09:16:38 -0800

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) is questionable at best for Week 15 against the New York Giants after not practicing Wednesday, Dec. 16, in the opinion of ESPN.com's David Newton.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) might be limited even if he does play, so he's one to avoid on FantasyScore this weekend. Fozzy Whittaker ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) and Cameron Artis-Payne ($2,000) will probably split duties in the backfield if J-Stew doesn't play, with Whittaker the best bet for a lead-back role. However, the prospect of Cam Newton or Mike Tolbert ($2,000) vulturing touchdowns probably makes this a situation to avoid entirely in daily play.
