The Carolina Panthers are hoping to keep RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart even though they are $10 million over the salary cap. The team believes they can retain Williams at his scheduled $5 million salary for 2013 and his $8.2 million cap figure.

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart's $1.5 million base salary in 2014 and $2.5 million of his $4.25 million base salary in 2015 are fully guaranteed because he was on the roster three days after the start of the 2013 waiver period. His salary cap figure from 2014 to 2017 will decrease by around $50,000 per season because of his contract restructuring. His 2014 option bonus has dropped from $9 million to $6.875 million because of the restructuring.

Updating a previous report, in late January, the Carolina Panthers and RB Jonathan Stewart made a slight adjustment to his five-year, $36.5 million contract extension reached last August, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Stewart was scheduled to make $1 million in fully guaranteed base salary in 2013, and after the renegotiation he will have his base lowered to $715,000 with a $2.5 million signing bonus. The move actually increased his cap number for 2013 from $2.8 million to $3.015 million in 2013.
Fantasy Tip: More will be expected of Stewart this season, as the team is not expected to bring back RB DeAngelo Williams. Stewart might re-emerge as a decent RB2 in fantasy leagues in 2013 if he gets a lion's share of the totes in Charlotte.

The Carolina Panthers may not be able to bring back both RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart next season, because the team has a lot of salary cap space tied up in their backfield.

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) said he underwent arthroscopic surgery Friday, Jan. 11, on his left ankle.
Fantasy Tip: Stewart was limited to just nine games this season and had career lows in rushing yards (336), yards-per-carry average (3.6) and rushing touchdowns (one). Stewart should be 100 percent come next season; however, it remains to be seen what the team's offense will look like in 2013. Former offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski is now the head coach in Cleveland, and the team also fired running backs coach John Settle. The Panthers will likely go back to more of a power-running scheme, with backs DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert also on the roster (for now).
