Cubs | Jason Motte earns another save

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 09:43:54 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jason Motte earned his second save of the season over the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday, June 22, but he allowed a run on two hits (one home run) in an inning of work. Both RPs Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon pitched scoreless innings before Motte was used.

Fantasy Tip: Joe Maddon is clearly going with a closer-by-committee right now that includes Rondon, Motte and Strop, and you should consider them fantasy-relevant in that order. Rafael Soriano's presence on the major league roster after the All-Star break could further complicate the picture.

Cubs | Pedro Strop was unavailable Sunday

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 10:15:55 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Pedro Strop, who secured the save over the Washington Nationals Saturday, June 6, was unavailable to pitch in a save situation Sunday, June 7, so RP Jason Motte recorded the save. RP Hector Rondon has temporarily been removed from the closer role by manager Joe Maddon, and he pitched the "less stressful" eighth inning Sunday. "I'll just wait till that day," said Maddon, who more than once employed a closer-by-committee approach while managing in Tampa Bay. "I'm not opposed to that method, either." Motte said he's comfortable pitching in any role, and after a year removed from Tommy John surgery, he's throwing harder than ever before.

Fantasy Tip: Closer-by-committees are always hard to judge for fantasy owners trying to nail down saves. Rondon should be kept in all leagues, since Maddon seems open to handing the job back to him. However, both Strop and Motte deserve attention from those scrounging for saves in all formats, too, with Strop probably more deserving as your first target.

Cubs | Hector Rondon out of closer role

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 07:57:10 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon is no longer the team's designated closer as manager Joe Maddon said the last three innings were no longer defined. RPs Pedro Strop and Jason Motte recorded saves over the weekend.

Fantasy Tip: If Rondon is being given a breather, Strop has better stuff than Motte. Motte has never regained the upper-90's gas he had before Tommy John surgery and is hittable. Pick up Strop if you're save speculating.

Cubs | Hector Rondon still closer

Sun, 07 Jun 2015 05:32:14 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon will remain the team's closer, but he may be used in lower-leverage situations in the near future, according to manager Joe Maddon Saturday, June 6. RP Pedro Strop recorded the save Saturday against the Washington Nationals.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon has allowed three runs and eight hits over his last seven and one-third innings. Owners should be hanging on to Rondon, but Strop will be worth a tentative add if owners have roster space.

Cubs | Hector Rondon out as closer?

Sat, 06 Jun 2015 13:14:44 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon might be given different chances to work on his game, according to manager Joe Maddon. Maddon stopped short of declaring a change in closers, though. Rondon was pulled from a save chance Saturday, June 6, after he walked the only batter he faced. RP Pedro Strop came in and struck out two of three batters to secure the save. "Obviously he hasn't been as sharp as he can be lately. For me, it was about winning the game today."

Fantasy Tip: Strop should be picked up for save speculators in mixed leagues and definitely in NL-only leagues. However, hold onto Rondon. We don't think he's finished here.

Cubs | Pedro Strop gets first save

Sun, 24 May 2015 05:57:28 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Pedro Strop picked up his first save of the season Saturday, May 23, against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Strop hasn't allowed a run in three and two-third innings over his last four appearances. Hector Rondon has blown two of his last three save opportunities, and NL-only owners should be adding Strop just in case the Cubs make a change in the ninth inning.

Cubs | Neil Ramirez expects to return when eligible

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 15:35:10 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Neil Ramirez (triceps) expects to return to the team once his 15-day disabled list stint is over. He is expected to continue his rehab in Mesa, Ariz., at the Cubs' facility rather than travel with the team on their upcoming six-game road trip to Los Angeles and Denver.

Fantasy Tip: Ramirez has pitched well this season. He should be back before Pedro Strop gains any traction in leapfrogging him on the depth chart.

Cubs | Hector Rondon on paternity list

Fri, 30 May 2014 12:02:54 -0700

The Chicago Cubs placed RP Hector Rondon on the paternity list Friday, May 30, and activated RP Pedro Strop (groin) from the disabled list in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon will miss a few days at minimum, so prepare for his absence. Considering Strop just returned, it remains to be seen if they'll trust him in a save situation right away with Rondon out. Your best bet for grabbing a cheap save over the next few days is with Neil Ramirez.
