Updating a previous item, Tim Twentyman, of The Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz confirmed RB Kevin Smith (shoulder) will not need to undergo surgery on his left shoulder.

"I don't want to put any stakes on it. I just know that I'm going to be ready for next year. How soon? I don't know. Smith said he expects to undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. Smith said, "I go tomorrow, so hopefully I won't leave Alabama without having the surgery. And hopefully I come back a new man. ... I'm just ready to get surgery and get back."
