Bears | Could give Jay Cutler new deal before Matt Forte

Thu, 24 May 2012 08:58:11 -0700

The Chicago Bears could possibly award QB Jay Cutler a long-term deal before disgruntled franchise free-agent RB Matt Forte. If the Bears budget at least $20 million in guarantees to one offensive back, investing in Cutler is smarter money than Forte. Cutler has two years remaining on a five-year, $50 million extension he signed in 2009.

Bears | Matt Forte talks continue, but franchise tag likely

Fri, 02 Mar 2012 10:50:24 -0800

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte, who is set to be an unrestricted free agent, will likely have the franchise tag placed on him Monday, March 5, unless he and the Bears are able to agree on a long-term deal between now and then. The Bears put a substantial offer in front of Forte last year before training camp, which he turned down and the two sides continued to talk over time but the Bears were never able to offer a deal that Forte liked.

Forte's agent has had conversations with new general manager Phil Emery, and working out a new deal before the franchise deadline is always possible. However, considering the two sides have not been able to already come to accord on a new contract, that may not be likely before March 5.
