Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher said he and his teammates hope franchise free-agent RB Matt Forte gets a long-term contract this offseason but is not optimistic about that happening. Urlacher said he thinks Forte will be with the team when the season begins even if he does not get a new deal.

The Chicago Bears could possibly award QB Jay Cutler a long-term deal before disgruntled franchise free-agent RB Matt Forte. If the Bears budget at least $20 million in guarantees to one offensive back, investing in Cutler is smarter money than Forte. Cutler has two years remaining on a five-year, $50 million extension he signed in 2009.

The Chicago Bears are currently $3.8 million below the 2012 salary cap, which includes the $7.74 million for franchise free-agent RB Matt Forte's tender. In essence, the Bears would have $11.5 million to devote to the first year of a multiyear deal for Forte.

Forte's agent is likely to look at the new deal for Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy, while the Bears might point to the deal the Jacksonville Jaguars gave to RB Maurice Jones-Drew. The negotiations between the Baltimore Ravens and RB Ray Rice also are important, as both players have similar values.
