Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand said the team has had talks with the agents for impending free-agent QB Shaun Hill, OT Jeff Backus, DE Cliff Avril, LB Stephen Tulloch and CB Eric Wright but would not say how far along any of the talks were at this point.

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DL Cliff Avril said he does not want the team to place the franchise tag on him this offseason. "I definitely don't want to be franchised," Avril said. "I mean, I've been in Detroit for four years, and I wouldn't mind being there for another couple more years or whatnot. The franchise tag kind of makes it a yearly thing, and you want security. You want to know you're going to be there for a couple years so your family can get comfortable." The Lions aren't prepared to use the tag on Avril, though, according to general manager Martin Mayhew.

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DL Cliff Avril said he is willing to make the move to linebacker in order to stay with the team next year. He started 12 games at strongside linebacker in college. However, it's unlikely the Lions use him as a full-time linebacker if he re-signs.

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he has no plans on using the franchise tag on impending free-agent DL Cliff Avril for now but acknowledged that could change. A person familiar with the negotiations said a new deal could be done before Avril hits the open market.

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DL Cliff Avril said he would like to re-sign with the team; however, he added that he is looking for the best possible deal as well. "It's all about if they want me to be here," Avril said. "I definitely want to be here, but I have to do the right thing for me and my family also. This doesn't roll around that often as far as trying to set yourself up and your family for the future, so it definitely has a lot to do with that."
