Cardinals | Chris Johnson leads ARI rushing attack

Sun, 17 Sep 2017 15:15:16 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson ran 11 times for 44 yards Sunday, Sept. 17, in a 16-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: These numbers aren't impressive overall, but keep in mind Johnson was hastily re-signed once Arizona lost David Johnson for at least eight weeks. He needs time to grow back into the role, so keep an eye on Johnson's matchups and how he does before fully committing. Johnson will battle Kerwynn Williams for touches.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson expected to get work

Wed, 13 Sep 2017 20:53:29 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson is "expected to get carries" in the team's Week 2 game Sunday, Sept. 17, versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: While he's not a recommended play for any format this weekend, considering he's third on the depth chart, Johnson is still someone worth watching considering how well he fared in his first go-around with the Cards. Remember, only two years ago in his first season in Arizona, Johnson had nearly 900 rushing yards in just 11 games before getting hurt, so he knows the system and could be capable of making an impact for fantasy clubs later on.

Cardinals | David Johnson officially goes to IR

Tue, 12 Sep 2017 13:50:19 -0700

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (wrist) was officially placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Sept. 12. Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) was officially re-signed in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Even with Chris Johnson returning to the Cardinals, Kerwynn Williams is the running back to own with David Johnson on the shelf. Williams will split time with Andre Ellington and Johnson, but he took over duties for Johnson last week and should be one of the top waiver wire additions heading into Week 2. Chris Johnson is merely a speculative add in deeper leagues.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson returns to Arizona

Tue, 12 Sep 2017 10:11:02 -0700

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) agreed to terms with the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Considering Arizona kept Kerwynn Williams over him at final cuts, it's hard to see Johnson being fantasy-relevant in 2017. Expect Williams to lead a committee including Andre Ellington and Elijhaa Penny while David Johnson recovers from wrist surgery, which is expected to sideline him for two to three months.

Cardinals | Arizona intends to bring back Chris Johnson

Tue, 12 Sep 2017 09:03:57 -0700

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) is expected to re-sign with the Arizona Cardinals following the news that David Johnson will miss two to three months to recover from wrist surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Unlike the previous two seasons, Chris Johnson will not assured of a role if/when he signs, as Kerwynn Williams will most likely start and form some kind of committee with Andre Ellington and likely Elijhaa Penny. At least for now, Williams is probably the only one worth fantasy consideration, and he'll likely be a low-end flex at best.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson will have a role

Fri, 21 Jul 2017 18:14:22 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will be on the field at the same time as RB David Johnson on occasion, head coach Bruce Arians said Friday, July 21. "We've had it in the plan every year and one of the two always gets hurt all the damn time," Arians said. "But we'll have some two-back stuff with he and David back there"

NFL | Chris Johnson not ready to step away

Fri, 02 Jun 2017 11:29:17 -0700

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) wants to continue his career and has stayed in "close contact" with the Arizona Cardinals. Johnson also notes becoming the 30th player to reach 10,000 career rushing yards - a mark from which he is 463 yards shy of - is a motivating factor.

Fantasy Tip: Both goals seem realistic for Johnson. Entering into what would be his age-32 season, "CJ2K" still has enough juice to be a solid backup and the 100 to 120 carries he would need for 10,000 yards isn't a lot to ask in that role. Expect a deal with the Cardinals or some other team to get done around training camp, as there is little benefit for someone with Johnson's wear-and-tear to be going through OTAs and minicamps.

NFL | Chris Johnson confident he can still go

Tue, 28 Feb 2017 19:26:14 -0800

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) said in an interview Tuesday, Feb. 28, that he can "definitely" still make plays and that he still has his speed.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson experienced some bad luck in his two years with the Cardinals, first falling just short of a 1,000-yard campaign in 2015 after fracturing his tibia with a handful of games remaining. Then this past season, he went down in Week 4 and required season-ending sports-hernia surgery. The 31-year-old should draw interest as a change-of-pace back, but his days of fantasy relevance are likely over.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson plans to play in 2017

Sat, 03 Dec 2016 21:22:55 -0800

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) indicated that he intends to play next season despite suffering injuries that have cut short his last two campaigns.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson's 2016 season officially came to end when the team utilized its designation to return elsewhere. It's difficult to imagine his best days aren't well behind him, but we'll see where he lands next year.

Cardinals | Season over for Chris Johnson

Wed, 23 Nov 2016 20:13:01 -0800

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) will not come off the Reserve/Injured list and his season is now over.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson's time in Arizona might now be over, too, as David Johnson has emerged as a star and the team still has Andre Ellington.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson eligible to return

Tue, 15 Nov 2016 20:09:42 -0800

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) is eligible to return to practice this week, as is S Tyvon Branch (hernia). Both are on the Reserve/Injured list and only one can be designated to return. Head coach Bruce Arians said the decision had not been made, and he also mentioned LB Alani Fua (knee) as a possibility.

Fantasy Tip: Arians said the decision would come down to health vs depth, so we'll see who they identify of the three. If it is Johnson, he'd slot in behind David Johnson, one of the NFL's top offensive performers this season, so his value would likely be minimal outside of a handcuff.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson ahead of schedule

Wed, 26 Oct 2016 20:15:04 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) said Wednesday, Oct. 26, that he is ahead of schedule in his rehab from a groin injury. However, he is uncertain if Johnson or SS Tyvon Branch (hernia) will be the player who returns from the Reserve/Injured Designated to Return list.

Fantasy Tip: CJ2K might be back at some point, but fantasy owners would only want to use him if David Johnson goes down with a long-term injury and Chris Johnson can prove his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Cardinals | Evan Mathis to have surgery

Mon, 10 Oct 2016 12:41:38 -0700

Arizona Cardinals OG Evan Mathis (ankle) will have surgery on his ankle, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Arians does not expect Mathis to return in six weeks, which could mean either RB Chris Johnson (groin) or SS Tyvon Branch (hernia) could return from the Reserve/Injured list.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson undergoes hernia surgery

Sat, 08 Oct 2016 21:10:12 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) underwent hernia surgery Thursday, Oct. 6, and subsequently indicated he'd be back "in a few weeks." He's currently on IR and is ineligible to return before Week 13.

Fantasy Tip: While Johnson could be activated later this season, he's one of several key contributors for the Cardinals to hit IR so there's no guarantee he'll be the one they bring back. He's not worth keeping on roster.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson to IR

Wed, 05 Oct 2016 09:44:14 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Oct. 5. He will be out a minimum of eight weeks.

Fantasy Tip: CJ2K had a limited role, but he rushed 25 times for 95 yards and a touchdown before succumbing to a hernia. Andre Ellington will have a slightly larger role behind David Johnson. Ellington is an RB5 worth handcuffing to Johnson.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson to have surgery

Tue, 04 Oct 2016 13:42:09 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (hernia) will undergo surgery on a sports hernia. His time frame is yet to be determined.

Fantasy Tip: It's probably safe to drop Johnson now, even though he could return late in the season. Andre Ellington should be given a look on the waiver wire in deeper leagues, but David Johnson will continue to be the workhorse running back in Arizona and is a weekly RB1.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson placed on IR

Tue, 04 Oct 2016 11:29:17 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Fantasy Tip: The extent of Johnson's injury still hasn't been disclosed, but it must be pretty severe. David Johnson will continue to be the featured back for Arizona, while Andre Ellington should now serve as Johnson's backup. Johnson owners can do worse than picking up Ellington as a handcuff if the roster allows it, but mainly in deeper leagues.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson not at practice Monday

Mon, 03 Oct 2016 12:53:46 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) did not participate in the part of practice open to the media Monday, Oct. 3.

Fantasy Tip: It puts his status for Thursday's game against the San Francisco 49ers in some doubt. At the moment, however, the only fantasy relevance this injury has is that Andre Ellington is shaping up to be David Johnson's handcuff for that game.

Cardinals | Groin injury for Chris Johnson

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 16:09:26 -0700

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) checked out of the Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams due to a groin injury and is questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson is the backup to starter David Johnson. If CJ2K is forced to miss time it might mean more touches for Andre Ellington.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson leaves game with injury

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 15:59:10 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (leg) went down awkwardly on a carry in the second half in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams due to what appeared to be a non-contact injury.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson was giving David Johnson a breather and has been seeing limited touches for fantasy owners. Hopefully his injury isn't considered serious.

Cardinals | David Johnson is an every-down back

Tue, 27 Sep 2016 20:13:58 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson played 79 of a possible 82 snaps against the Buffalo Bills in Week 3. RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington logged just three and one, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: There were some mild concerns after Chris Johnson (16 carries) got more work than David Johnson (12) in Week 2 that the former might have a larger role going forward, but Week 3 proves D. Johnson is among the few legit every-down backs in the NFL and a RB1 in all fantasy formats.

Cardinals | David Johnson will have help

Thu, 11 Aug 2016 13:29:38 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson will not be run into the ground early on in the regular season because RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington will be able to help, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Fantasy Tip: That being said, David Johnson will be Arizona's go-to back as long as he's healthy. Johnson quickly became one of the most complete running backs in the NFL and should be taken in the first or second round of fantasy drafts with added value in PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington could play receiver

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 14:55:03 -0700

The majority of Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington's playing time may come at wide receiver, as long as RBs David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, according to azcardinals.com's Darren Urban.

Fantasy Tip: Ellington has had injury issues throughout his career, and he'll likely be the No. 3 running back in 2016, so his fantasy value is really limited right now. He still shouldn't be totally overlooked, though, and taking a deep flier on Ellington in later rounds isn't the worst strategy.

Cardinals | David Johnson will be featured

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 14:45:34 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is the unquestioned bellcow running back for the Cardinals this year, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com. RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington will back up like they did for most of 2015.

Fantasy Tip: As long as David Johnson is healthy, he'll be the primary ball carrier in Arizona, and he deserves to be after a stellar rookie campaign. Draft Johnson as a top-five fantasy running back in all formats.

Cardinals | Cards could use two RBs at a time

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 19:11:17 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is expected to get a lion's share of the work, but RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington each have skillsets which could help the offense. In fact, head coach Bruce Arians hinted Tuesday, June 7, that two backs could be on the field at the same time. "When I first came here, that's something B.A. told me he wanted to do," Chris Johnson said. "It started off with me getting here late (in training camp), then Andre getting hurt early and me getting hurt. It was hard to get two of us on the field at one time, but that's something we've really been working hard on."

Fantasy Tip: The Cardinals have three talented backs, but David Johnson is the one you'll want to pick first on draft day, with CJ2K as a pick for depth and Andre Ellington as a reserve in PPR formats.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson could start for Arizona

Tue, 31 May 2016 16:54:18 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson could claim the starting job in Arizona's backfield despite head coach Bruce Arians claiming that RB David Johnson is the bell cow back, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss.

Fantasy Tip: Make no mistake -- David Johnson is the running back to own in Arizona. He has top-five running back potential even with the other Johnson splitting touches with him. As for Chris Johnson, he has RB4 upside in PPR formats if he can stay healthy.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson likes RB tandem

Sat, 28 May 2016 07:04:49 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson said he believes he and RB David Johnson can be the best running back tandem in the NFL. David Johnson said Chris Johnson has helped him become a more patient running back.

Fantasy Tip: David Johnson probably will receive a majority of the work at running back, but Chris Johnson will also be involved in the running game. Both running backs should be owned in fantasy leagues, but David Johnson should be a weekly starting option.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson not worried about role

Sat, 02 Apr 2016 17:33:01 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson said he believes head coach Bruce Arians will know how to make sure both he and RB David Johnson receive touches. "Not sure how things are going to go, but I'm pretty sure we'll have a nice one-two punch," Chris Johnson said.

Fantasy Tip: David Johnson is expected to be the lead back, but Chris Johnson could still make a solid RB3 in PPR formats. At the very least, CJ2K is a must-own player in case David Johnson struggles or suffers an injury.

Dolphins | Miami eyeing Ezekiel Elliott?

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 18:16:41 -0700

Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott is being considered as an option for the 13th overall pick by the Miami Dolphins, who missed out on Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson and Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson in free agency.

Fantasy Tip: Elliott has the all-around game to thrive in Adam Gase's offensive system, and he could provide RB2 value as a rookie. If Miami does use a first-round pick on Elliott, Jay Ajayi would no longer be a starting-caliber fantasy back.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson returns to Cards

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 12:39:02 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson re-signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals Thursday, March 17, according to a source. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: CJ2K was having a nice rebound season in Arizona before fracturing his tibia in Week 12. Timing is everything, though, and David Johnson took the primary backfield role and ran with it. Heading into 2016, the Cardinals will continue to use the versatile and explosive younger Johnson as their primary back, and Andre Ellington remains in the picture, as well. That means Chris Johnson will likely battle for touches as a third-down option with Ellington. He could be a useful RB3 in point-per-reception leagues, but that'll be his ceiling now that he's 30 and coming off a serious injury.

Dolphins | Chris Johnson likely to pick soon

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 18:58:15 -0700

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) visited with the Miami Dolphins, and he is expected to pick between the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins. Other teams have requested visits, but he is unlikely to make them at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson would have a chance at major carries and yardage in Miami, as Lamar Miller is now on the Houston Texans and the team needs someone to shoulder the load. A return to Arizona would mean a timeshare, at best, with David Johnson, among others.

Cardinals | Arizona still in mix for CJ2K

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 18:57:40 -0700

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) visited the Miami Dolphins this week, and he is expected to select between his old team, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Miami Dolphins soon. Other clubs have requested a meeting, but he is unlikely to make them at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson resurrected his career in Glendale last season, but David Johnson emerged as a star once Johnson went down. At best, CJ2K would be in an even carries split with Johnson. He would likely have a better chance to shoulder more of the load in Miami, so it remains to be seen how his fantasy value will shake down until he makes a decision. He'll have more appeal in South Florida.

NFL | Two finalists for Chris Johnson

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 17:28:30 -0700

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) is expected to sign with either the Arizona Cardinals or Miami Dolphins. Johnson has received interest from other teams but is not expected to make any more trips.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson probably will make a decision in the near future, but he probably will not be a starter with either team. Johnson could be a third-down back with whoever he signs with, which will give him some fantasy value. Owners could consider him a No. 3 running back in most leagues, but Johnson probably will not be a weekly starting option.

Dolphins | Chris Johnson visiting Miami

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 08:41:34 -0700

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) is visiting with the Miami Dolphins Wednesday, March 16.

Fantasy Tip: Does CJ2k have another "prove them wrong" season left in him at 31? It's questionable. He'll be an RB3 consideration in fantasy most likely.

NFL | Chris Johnson could sign soon

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 11:31:41 -0700

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) could sign with a team as early as this week, according to a source. Prospective teams were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson has voiced his desire to return to the Cardinals, but David Johnson proved last year that he is ready to be their featured running back. Johnson still has some gas left in the tank, though, and played well when he was healthy in Arizona. His fantasy value depends on which team he signs with, but he could still be in RB3 territory in PPR formats.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson wants to return

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 22:17:48 -0800

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent RB Chris Johnson said Tuesday, Feb. 23, that he has spoken with head coach Bruce Arians and running backs coach Stump Mitchell about returning to the team in 2016. "They want me back and I want to be back, but you know how the business side is," Johnson said in a satellite radio interview.

Fantasy Tip: CJ2K bounced back with 814 yard and three touchdowns through 11 games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. The emergence of David Johnson means Chris Johnson would likely have to take a backseat, or at least share the carries, if he does return. Both would be low-end RB2 or flex fantasy options if that situation occurs.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson ready for Super Bowl

Tue, 19 Jan 2016 14:51:00 -0800

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (leg) will be ready to play if the Cardinals make it to the Super Bowl. Johnson said he feels explosive and that he could have played last weekend, but he is not eligible to return from the short-term Injured Reserve until next week.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson's eligibility is moot if the Cardinals aren't victorious versus the Carolina Panthers this weekend. If Arizona comes out on top, it gives them yet another weapon for the Super Bowl in addition to David Johnson in the backfield.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson resumes practicing

Tue, 12 Jan 2016 14:34:58 -0800

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (leg) returned to practice Tuesday, Jan. 12. He is still on the short-term Reserve/Injured list and is not eligible to play until the Super Bowl.

Fantasy Tip: David Johnson ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) will remain Arizona's featured running back this weekend. He has been on a tear since Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington ($3,800, 7.6%) went down with injuries. Ellington should receive some touches, too, but he's second fiddle to David Johnson right now.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson put on IR

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 13:49:44 -0800

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (leg) was placed on the short-term Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Dec. 1, and promoted RB Kerwynn Williams from the practice squad to the active roster in a corresponding move. CB Robert Nelson was also released. Free-agent SS D.J. Swearinger (Buccaneers) was signed to the practice squad and TE Brandon Bostick was released.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson will be out at least six weeks. He'd be eligible to return if Arizona advanced to the Super Bowl. You can forget about him in all fantasy formats for the rest of this year. David Johnson is an immediate add off the waiver wire, and he could start in Week 13 against the St. Louis Rams if Andre Ellington is out of action with turf toe.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson close to incentives

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 08:11:58 -0800

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (leg) is 36 rushing yards away from earning a $250,000 bonus for 850 yards, according to a league source. Johnson had $1.13 million in incentives in his contract and has earned $280,000 of those alongside his $870,000 base salary.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson could be out the rest of the regular season, pending tests to confirm a broken tibia. David Johnson ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) figures to be the lead back this week with Andre Ellington (toe) also banged up. Johnson doesn't have the best matchup, with the St. Louis Rams to contend with, but he's a low-end RB2 option on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson has fractured tibia

Mon, 30 Nov 2015 15:16:42 -0800

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (leg) suffered a fractured tibia during the team's Week 12 game and will miss an extended period of time. The team is still waiting to receive a definite timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: David Johnson could become the starting running back if Johnson and Andre Ellington miss significant time. Owners should monitor the practice participation this week to see who will be available to play against the St. Louis Rams in Week 13. David Johnson could be a solid starting option in some leagues.
