Falcons | Matty Ice busy in setback

Sun, 11 Sep 2016 20:56:37 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan completed 27 of his 39 pass attempts for 334 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan always has good rapport with Julio Jones, but he also jelled rather quickly with newcomer Mohamed Sanu and he connected with Tevin Coleman out of the backfield for several big plays as well. As long as all of his weapons remain healthy, Ryan should be a borderline QB1/2 in all formats going forward.

Falcons | Matt Ryan plays one snap

Thu, 01 Sep 2016 18:26:35 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan played one snap in the preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, Sept. 1, before being replaced by QB Matt Schaub.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan finished fifth in passing yards last season, but Atlanta's inability to finish off drives resulted in his lowest touchdown total since his rookie season. He is a potential QB2 candidate, and he could still be on the board later in drafts.

Falcons | Matt Ryan worked on deep throws

Thu, 01 Sep 2016 16:32:45 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan spent six weeks training with former MLB pitcher Tom House and former college pitcher Adam Dedeaux -- who have also worked with New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees and Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer, to name a few with -- at the acclaimed 3DQB training facility in working to enhance his ability to throw deep. Ryan firmly believes there's a noticeable difference in his deep ball and WR Julio Jones was the first to say the quarterback's arm strength is much stronger than it was last year.

Fantasy Tip: Although Ryan finished in the top five in passing yards in 2015, he still had a disappointing season, registering his fewest touchdown passes since his rookie campaign. Many believe it had much to do with him trying to adjust to new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, so at least Ryan now has some more familiarity with Shanahan's offense. Once one of the league's upper echelon signal-callers, Ryan could still be one of the best value picks at quarterback with a solid cast of weapons surrounding him, including arguably the game's best receiver in Jones, and a much-improved offensive line after the addition of center Alex Mack.

Falcons | Red zone interception for Matt Ryan

Thu, 25 Aug 2016 20:31:08 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan completed 12 of his 22 passes for 129 yards and threw an interception in the red zone in a 17-6 preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins Thursday, Aug. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan ranked fifth in passing yards last year, but his 21 touchdowns were his fewest since his rookie year. Converting in the red zone continues to be an issue, and while he has QB1 upside, Ryan is better served as a high-end backup.

Falcons | Matt Ryan shows improvement

Fri, 19 Aug 2016 11:00:42 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan had a much better outing in his second preseason game Thursday, August 18, versus the Cleveland Browns, after going 0-for-4 and leading two three-and-outs in the team's exhibition opener. Ryan followed that up by completing 8-of-12 passes for 78 yards over three possessions.

Fantasy Tip: In 2015, Ryan didn't live up to the higher expectations he has set for himself throughout his outstanding career, but that doesn't mean he had a bad season last year. After all, the Boston College product did finish fifth in the NFL with 4,591 passing yards, while completing 66.3% of his passes, which was good for sixth amongst league leaders. Still having Julio Jones on his side, not to mention the addition of Mohamed Sanu, Ryan still has the ability to be an upper echelon signal-caller, and could end up being one of the best values at quarterback this season.

Falcons | Matt Ryan's practice picks a non-issue

Tue, 02 Aug 2016 20:21:09 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan throwing interceptions in practice isn't a concern of head coach Dan Quinn.

"This is the time to try everything, whether is a different route or a different look," Quinn said Tuesday, Aug. 2, after Ryan threw a virtual pick-six during the team period. "It's also an important part for the defense, too, to know how they get after the ball. For us, this is what this time is all about is getting the timing down and getting the routes right. Some of that happens in our training camp practice. But for us, it's about the ball, we know that."

Fantasy Tip: Ryan's numbers slipped a bit in 2016, but the tale of the tape is pretty much on par with much of his career. He completed 66.3% of his passes for 4,591 yards and 21 touchdowns with 16 interceptions. At this point, we know what Ryan is, and that's not a top-flight fantasy quarterback. He'll be in the low-end QB1 mix.

Falcons | Mohamed Sanu bonding with QB

Wed, 13 Jul 2016 21:14:36 -0700

Atlanta Falcons WR Mohamed Sanu has bonded with QB Matt Ryan, working together at Ryan's passing camp in Orlando, and throughout June minicamp. The duo built chemistry as the practices wore on. "He's got great hands," Ryan said. "One of the things I noticed right from the start is how strong his hands are. He's a really good worker. I think he can really help us."

Fantasy Tip: Sanu will step into the role vacated by veteran Roddy White. He has never posted more than 790 receiving yards in a season, but that should change in 2016. If not, he will be a huge fantasy bust since he shouldn't slip past the middle rounds in most formats on draft day.

Falcons | Matt Ryan working on feet

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 15:09:34 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan has been working on increasing his comfort level with the offense this offseason. Ryan has worked in front of a mirror to try to get his feet in the right position to be able to throw the ball the way he wants to and to improve the timing of the play. He is able to watch his feet closely this way and can make sure everything is aligned correctly before dropping back.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan definitely struggled in Kyle Shanahan's offense last season, throwing just 21 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. He did throw for over 4,500 yards, but he's still a backup fantasy quarterback heading into 2016.

Falcons | Matt Ryan still confident in offense

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 15:42:19 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan admitted Tuesday, April 19, that he took too long at times to process offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's scheme in 2015. Ryan said he is excited to have Shanahan back for another season. "As you're in a system more, you start focusing on the things that are important," Ryan said. "What you're going against defensively, what your keys are in protection, what you're looking for from a coverage standpoint."

Ryan also said that he thought all the players involved in a recent passing camp felt more comfortable with the offense, adding that he could tell early on that they were a lot further along than at certain points midway through last season.

Fantasy Tip: There was definitely a bit of a learning curve for Ryan and the Falcons last season, maybe save for Julio Jones, who can do anything in any offense. As for Ryan, he remains out of QB1 territory despite a season of Shanahan's offense under his belt.

Falcons | Matt Ryan throwing with teammates

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 14:07:46 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan is getting together with WR Julio Jones, RB Devonta Freeman and other Falcons for passing sessions this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: It sure doesn't hurt for teammates to practice together well before the season starts. There's no telling how offseason comradery and chemistry can impact players during the regular season. Freeman and Jones should already be considered No. 1 players at their respective positions, while Ryan is in backup fantasy quarterback territory.
