Arizona Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor will compete for playing time this year behind RB Rashard Mendenhall. As The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers suggests, Taylor isn't a very fast running back, but he's elusive and durable. RB Ryan Williams has had serious injuries in each of the last two years.

Arizona Cardinals RB Rashard Mendenhall never was 100 percent healed from his serious knee injury last season, according to Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert. Although Mendenhall returned for the Steelers' fourth game, Colbert believes he never got back to the shape he was in 2011. "Honestly, I don't think he ever quite got to the point where he was 100 percent as we've seen him before," Colbert said.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians praised RB Rashard Mendenhall Wednesday, March 13, just one day after the free-agent was signed. "As a running back he's the total package," Arians said. "He's a big, strong every-down back with speed who can pass block and also catch the ball. I've said before: he's a big man with little-people feet, meaning he can run like he's 180 (pounds) but also pound the ball like he's 230."
Fantasy Tip: Mendenhall will still need to go through offseason workouts and the preseason battling Ryan Williams for the starting job. Arians has familiarity with Mendenhall from their days together with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the head coach also likes Williams and his potential, and both are Virginia Tech alumnae. It appears Arians is quite happy with his stable of runners, and a split in carries is likely, at least initially. Both are considered low-end RB2s or flex fantasy options for the time being.

The Arizona Cardinals have agreed to terms with free-agent RB Rashard Mendenhall (Steelers) on a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Fantasy Tip: Mendenhall probably will have to split carries with Ryan Williams this season, which would hurt his fantasy value. Playing time, a below-average offensive line, and quarterback uncertainty should make Mendenhall a No. 4 running back in drafts with the potential to become a No. 3 back as the season goes on.
