According to a high-ranking team source, the team will likely start Johnson in Week 9. However, the source said Johnson's obvious limitations within the offense might prompt head coach Wade Phillips and his staff to consider other options, including No. 3 QB Brooks Bollinger.

Kevin Seifert, of the Minnesota Star-Tribune, reports during an appearance on KFAN-1130, Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress downplayed the possibility of adding veteran free agent QB Jeff Garcia (Eagles) this year due to the club's incumbent presence at the position. "There was enough furor over a 37-year-old quarterback [Brad Johnson] this year," Childress said. "So I'm kind of surprised [to hear about] Jeff Garcia." Garcia will turn 37 later this month.

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said Tuesday, Jan. 2, QB Tarvaris Jackson and QB Brooks Bollinger will compete for the team's starting quarterback job next season. Childress is scheduled to meet with QB Brad Johnson Tuesday, Jan. 2, to discuss the quarterback's future. Although Johnson is under contract through 2008, Childress said he would not hold Johnson to that deal against his will. If Johnson were to remain on the roster he would serve in a "mentoring" capacity, Childress added.

KSTP.com reports two players from the Minnesota Vikings told 5 Eyewitness News a majority of the team's players are upset, frustrated and aggravated with head coach Brad Childress' offensive philosophies and his play-calling. The majority of players say Childress has been approached by players and coaches to try and jump start the offense. The players claim the system handcuffed QB Brad Johnson, who recently lost his starting job to QB Tarvaris Jackson. Johnson made repeated attempts and suggestions to Childress in hopes of improving the offense. The players do believe that Childress is well organized and well structured, but feel he needs to be more flexible in his play calls.

The Associated Press reports Minnesota Vikings QB Brad Johnson was benched during the Week 15 game for the third time this season. Rookie QB Tarvaris Jackson replaced him and completed 14 of 23 passes for 177 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Johnson was 10-of-17 for 96 yards with one touchdown before he was benched. While Johnson did not commit any turnovers, he was sacked three times for 28 yards. Head coach Brad Childress did not name a starting quarterback for the Week 16 game. "We'll just see who gives us the best chance to win," Childress said.

QB Brooks Bollinger (shoulder) replaced Johnson and threw for 70 yards after completing 7-of-9 throws. He left the game with an injured left shoulder and was replaced by rookie QB Tarvaris Jackson, who was 3-for-4 for 35 yards. Head coach Brad Childress did not say if Johnson's benching would carry over to Week 14. "I would really be remiss about making a decision about a starting quarterback a half-hour after a Sunday game. We usually make those decisions during the week," said Childress.

Johnson has also lost three fumbles, resulting in nine of the team's 12 turnovers in their past four games. "We've also got to eliminate the negative plays on first down, where we put ourselves in second-and-15 or third-and-15 situations. But fumbles have really hurt us. If we can eliminate the penalties and negative plays and then take care of the football, we'll be all right," Johnson said.

But Childress said no decision has been made about playing time behind Johnson. "We haven't talked about the next two just yet," he said.
