Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RPs Ernesto Frieri and Dane De La Rosa will split the closer duties for the time being, according to manager Mike Scioscia. Frieri tossed two scoreless innings Saturday, Aug. 17, and hasn't given up a run in his last three appearances, but Scioscia isn't ready to install him back in the role. De La Rosa has a team-high 56 appearances and has one save in four chances.
Fantasy Tip: Both pitchers deserved to be owned in all formats if you're chasing saves at this late juncture. Frieri, if he continues to pitch well, could get the gig back exclusively. Until that happens, though, De La Rosa will see opps.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri has temporarily lost his closer job and will be used in low-pressure situations for now.
Fantasy Tip: It appears Dane De La Rosa will get the first chance to close games out, but Kevin Jepsen and Michael Kohn could also receive opportunities. De La Rosa should be an option for mixed league owners looking for saves. Jepsen and Kohn should be targeted in AL-only leagues and some mixed leagues if an owner is desperate, but they may not be good pickups because Frieri could regain the job at some point.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri is due a big bump in salary this offseason, the first in which he's arbitration-eligible. From May 23, 2012 -- the day he recorded his first career save -- through Wednesday, July 10, Frieri is tied for ninth in the majors in saves (45) and tied for eighth in save percentage (90.0). In that span, he's held batters to a .579 OPS while posting a 2.81 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. He was working on a cutter and a changeup in spring training, but he's thrown fastballs 89.3 percent of the time this year, according to pitchF/X. Frieri said that he believes he's rediscovered an appropriate release point in the past few days.
Fantasy Tip: Frieri still has bouts of wildness, but his largely (and theoretically, since he really throws a four-seamer and a variation of a two-seamer) single-pitch repertoire is just deadly, as long as he's mechanically sound. The Halos have no reason to look elsewhere for a closer in the near future.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) threw from a bullpen mound three times in the past week and has been doing so once every three days. He next performs this task on Thursday, July 4. He aims to return to in-game rehab work in a couple of weeks.
Fantasy Tip: We're probably looking at a Madson return sometime in August if all goes well. It's looking far more unlikely that he'll challenge Ernesto Frieri for many, if any, save chances this year.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim general manager Jerry Dipoto said he has no idea when RP Ryan Madson (elbow) can return. "I have no idea. It's rehab. He's rehabbing from surgery. This is our exposure to Ryan Madson, three or four months of his rehabilitation. I don't know I could bet on any one of the thousands of players who have had Tommy John surgery to come back with 100 percent certainty to look like how they did before or contribute."
Fantasy Tip: Although Ernesto Frieri has struggled in save chances of late, the Halos really have no other late-inning options to go to with Madson's rehab from Tommy John surgery lingering. In mixed leagues, don't feel the need to hang onto Madson right now if you have other pressing needs.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) played catch Monday, June 3, but isn't ready to throw a bullpen session yet.
Fantasy Tip: Madson basically had to restart his program after having several setbacks in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The bottom line is we expect Ernesto Frieri to be save for at least another month's worth of save opps as Madson works his way back to full health.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri recorded the save Thursday, May 30. Earlier in the day, he said that his fastball hadn't had the late life and rise, especially last night, that helped him to a brilliant 2012 run. Frieri resolved to keep throwing it, though, because he doesn't have faith in his cutter or changeup and he believes the desired movement on his fastball will come back.
Fantasy Tip: Frieri should have more time to experiment with it. Ryan Madson (elbow) had another setback recently and probably won't return sometime in June, and he won't earn early consideration to take the closer job. Frieri has survived on one pitch before, and the Halos' bullpen depth isn't comfortable enough for someone to challenge him for the role.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) has had another setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Madson felt soreness in his arm, which required him to stop throwing. He hopes to resume his rehab next week, but there is no timetable for his return.
Fantasy Tip: Madson had a pretty minor setback with his elbow already, but it's pretty vague as to the severity of this latest setback. Regardless, it gives Ernesto Frieri more rope as the incumbent closer. The Angels will probably give Madson more time to prove he's healthy in non-save situations when he returns, too. If you already own Madson, sit tight.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (elbow) and RP Ryan Madson (elbow) are continuing their rehab and are close to rejoining the team. Manager Mike Scioscia said Weaver will need at least two more rehab outings starting next week. Madson will need at least one more appearance either Wednesday, May 15, or Thursday, May 16.
Fantasy Tip: Weaver threw an 80-pitch bullpen session today, which is very encouraging. His injury is to his non-throwing elbow, so he's just focusing on building strength in his pitching arm. If you're desperate for saves, it's not a bad idea to grab Madson if he's on your waiver wire, even though he'll initially serve as Ernesto Frieri's setup man.
