Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri will have his outings limited to one inning this year, according to manager Mike Scioscia. "I think he'll maintain his stuff better and maybe be more effective," said the skipper, who expects his setup men and corps of relievers in general to be better this year. Frieri recorded seven saves of at least four outs in 2013. No other pitcher notched more than four.
Fantasy Tip: This is good news for Frieri owners, because his 2013 usage certainly didn't help his cause to reach a sub-4.00 ERA. Folks should hope that the Halos are right about their improved bullpen, though, because it sounds as if Scioscia is still willing to utilize Frieri for more than three outs if necessary.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri is very proud of his changeup this spring. "I have a nasty changeup that nobody's going to touch," Frieri said with a big smile. "You'll see." He threw 88 percent fastballs last year, 10 percent cutters and just two percent changeups. Frieri said he feels much more confident in his changeup this spring.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim signed free-agent RP Brandon Lyon (Red Sox) to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training Monday, Feb. 10.
Fantasy Tip: Lyon is probably a long shot to be the fallback option in the ninth inning if Ernesto Frieri falters at some point.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim general manager Jerry DiPoto told media the team is not looking for relief pitchers who have closing experience. Sources believe the team is set with RP Joe Smith as a setup guy and CL Ernesto Frieri as the main stopper.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RPs Ernesto Frieri and Dane De La Rosa will split the closer duties for the time being, according to manager Mike Scioscia. Frieri tossed two scoreless innings Saturday, Aug. 17, and hasn't given up a run in his last three appearances, but Scioscia isn't ready to install him back in the role. De La Rosa has a team-high 56 appearances and has one save in four chances.
Fantasy Tip: Both pitchers deserved to be owned in all formats if you're chasing saves at this late juncture. Frieri, if he continues to pitch well, could get the gig back exclusively. Until that happens, though, De La Rosa will see opps.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri has temporarily lost his closer job and will be used in low-pressure situations for now.
Fantasy Tip: It appears Dane De La Rosa will get the first chance to close games out, but Kevin Jepsen and Michael Kohn could also receive opportunities. De La Rosa should be an option for mixed league owners looking for saves. Jepsen and Kohn should be targeted in AL-only leagues and some mixed leagues if an owner is desperate, but they may not be good pickups because Frieri could regain the job at some point.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri is due a big bump in salary this offseason, the first in which he's arbitration-eligible. From May 23, 2012 -- the day he recorded his first career save -- through Wednesday, July 10, Frieri is tied for ninth in the majors in saves (45) and tied for eighth in save percentage (90.0). In that span, he's held batters to a .579 OPS while posting a 2.81 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. He was working on a cutter and a changeup in spring training, but he's thrown fastballs 89.3 percent of the time this year, according to pitchF/X. Frieri said that he believes he's rediscovered an appropriate release point in the past few days.
Fantasy Tip: Frieri still has bouts of wildness, but his largely (and theoretically, since he really throws a four-seamer and a variation of a two-seamer) single-pitch repertoire is just deadly, as long as he's mechanically sound. The Halos have no reason to look elsewhere for a closer in the near future.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) threw from a bullpen mound three times in the past week and has been doing so once every three days. He next performs this task on Thursday, July 4. He aims to return to in-game rehab work in a couple of weeks.
Fantasy Tip: We're probably looking at a Madson return sometime in August if all goes well. It's looking far more unlikely that he'll challenge Ernesto Frieri for many, if any, save chances this year.
