Tue, 14 May 2013 16:34:35 -0700 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver (elbow) and RP Ryan Madson (elbow) are continuing their rehab and are close to rejoining the team. Manager Mike Scioscia said Weaver will need at least two more rehab outings starting next week. Madson will need at least one more appearance either Wednesday, May 15, or Thursday, May 16. Fantasy Tip: Weaver threw an 80-pitch bullpen session today, which is very encouraging. His injury is to his non-throwing elbow, so he's just focusing on building strength in his pitching arm. If you're desperate for saves, it's not a bad idea to grab Madson if he's on your waiver wire, even though he'll initially serve as Ernesto Frieri's setup man.
Sun, 12 May 2013 13:16:24 -0700 Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) is scheduled to make a rehab appearance for Single-A Inland Empire Monday, May 13, and could come off the disabled list after that appearance. Fantasy Tip: Madson will not be used as the closer when he initially comes off the disabled list but should be valuable in all leagues. Madson likely would get the chance to close games if Ernesto Frieri struggles at some point.
Wed, 08 May 2013 14:22:20 -0700 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) will head to extended spring training, where he'll likely need two to three outings before being activated from the disabled list. Fantasy Tip: Madson should be owned in all leagues, even though he won't be closing games out initially when he makes his debut with the team. That job still belongs to Ernesto Frieri, but if you own him, hopefully you have Madson, or others, to replace him eventually.
Tue, 07 May 2013 14:39:58 -0700 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, May 7, and hopes to start throwing in extended spring training Thursday, May 9, or Friday, May 10. Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how many minor league rehab outings Madson will require, but the fact is that he's getting closer and closer to rejoining the team. It's also unknown how long it'll be before Mike Scioscia trusts Madson to closing duties, but it'll likely come eventually at the expense of Ernesto Frieri. Madson should be owned in all formats right now.
Wed, 01 May 2013 16:03:46 -0700 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri recorded a five-out save that took 35 pitches over the Oakland Athletics Wednesday, May 1. "We're not real comfortable with that, but Ernie said he had two innings if we needed it," manager Mike Scioscia said. Fantasy Tip: With Ryan Madson (elbow) on the horizon for a return to make his season debut, things will surely change in the back end of the Halos' bullpen. Frieri, who walked three today, hasn't been sharp lately, so Madson, if healthy and effective, could take over the closer's job sooner than expected. If Madson is still available in any leagues, don't wait any longer.
Tue, 30 Apr 2013 11:52:16 -0700 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri blew the save against the Oakland Athletics Monday, April 29, by allowing a hit and a run in the bottom of the ninth inning. He walked one and struck out two in the outing.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 11:30:35 -0700 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ernesto Frieri allowed a solo home run in the ninth inning of a tied game to lose to the Texas Rangers Monday, April 22. "They were all swinging because they know that I use my fastball and I keep doing it," Frieri said. "If I pitch tomorrow, I'm going to go out there with my best stuff. If I'm going to get beat, I'm going to get beat like that - using my best stuff. I'm not a breaking-ball guy."
Fri, 19 Apr 2013 16:32:44 -0700 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) threw to four hitters during a 20-pitch simulated game Friday, April 19, and he wasn't happy with his performance, but he said his elbow was fine. Fantasy Tip: This is probably a sign of things to come for Madson as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery; pitchers typically struggle with location in their initial return to game action, so don't be surprised if control problems plague Madson when he returns to the Angels. Ernesto Frieri will continue as the Angels closer, but Madson will receive the chance to work his way back and eventually take the job.
Tue, 16 Apr 2013 21:26:05 -0700 Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) will throw to hitters Friday, April 19. When he does return, manager Mike Scioscia said Madson's role is still to be determined. "The way (RP Ernesto Frieri) has thrown, to be thrown into the fire, I don't know," Madson said. "It's totally up to them. I'm here for a reason, but I just want to pitch and get outs."
Fri, 15 Mar 2013 20:53:25 -0700 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia does not plan on starting the season with a designated closer. He said Friday, March 15, that he expects RPs Scott Downs and Ernesto Frieri to share the duties based on the situation until RP Ryan Madson (elbow) is fully recovered from Tommy John surgery. Fantasy Tip: Frieri and Downs are worth a look in deeper AL-only fantasy formats, but they shouldn't be used in mixed formats unless someone steps forward and claims the job outright.
