The Atlanta Braves signed general manager Frank Wren to a two-year contract extension Monday, Feb. 21, according to The Associated Press. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Braves | Bob Johnson hired

The Atlanta Braves have hired Bob Johnson as a special assistant to general manager Frank Wren, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman. Johnson is expected to serve primarily as an advance scout, in a role similar to the ones he had with the New York Mets (2007-10), Texas Rangers (2005-06) and Oakland Athletics (1997-2004).

Braves | GM believes team better than at end of 2009

Heading into spring training, Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren believes his team is better than it was at the end of 2009, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Jeff Schultz. "We've got good baseball people in this organization and we feel good about this group of players. I can't get caught up in the media perception of what we've done to this point. The proof's going to be when we take the field," Wren said.

Braves | Team likely done looking for pitching help

The Associated Press, updating a previous item, is reporting the Atlanta Braves are likely through with acquiring pitching help now that the team has acquired RP Takashi Saito via free agency. General manager Frank Wren has said the team is in the market for a power-hitting outfielder or first baseman, perhaps both, heading into next week's winter meetings. "Frank and Bruce (Manno, the assistant GM) are working on something else right now and maybe give us a chance to score a few more runs," Braves manager Bobby Cox said.

Braves | Setback for Soriano

David O'Brien, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Braves RP Rafael Soriano (side) told team trainers he strained a side muscle while pitching in the Tuesday, March 24, game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. General manager Frank Wren said the severity of the strain wasn't known, so it was too early to determine whether Soriano would be ready when the regular season begins April 5 at the Philadelphia Phillies.

Glavine said he let Wren know that he is expecting to be ready for the start of the 2009 season. Glavine remains interested in returning but the team may not have enough money left over to satisfy the southpaw.

Jerry Crasnick, of ESPN.com, reports free-agent SP Tom Glavine (Braves) is expected to meet with Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren later in the week, according to a baseball source. Glavine has received a positive report from Dr. James Andrews and expects to be ready for Opening Day. He could be the front-runner for the No. 5 rotation spot if he returns to the team.

Braves | Cox hopes deal is close for Kawakami

Updating previous reports, several media outlets reported that the Atlanta Braves reached a preliminary agreement with Japanese P Kenshin Kawakami Saturday, Jan. 10, but manager Bobby Cox could not confirm the deal, according to The Associated Press. However, he did say the team is interested in Kawakami. "We've had some guys watch him the last couple of years, and they like him," Cox said. General manager Frank Wren, assistant general manager Bruce Manno and Dan Evans, the agent for Kawakami, did not comment on the situation.

Braves | Upset with Furcal proceedings

David O'Brien, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren is upset with the way negotiations went down with Los Angeles Dodgers SS Rafael Furcal. "I think you have to be upset with the turn of events," Wren said. "We don't do business this way. You don't expect people you have to deal with to do business this way." Wren indicated that Paul Kinzer, the agent for Furcal, negotiated all contract details for Furcal to sign with the Braves Monday, Dec. 15, and a term sheet was sent to Kinzer's office for Furcal to sign Tuesday, Dec. 16. The term sheet was never returned, according to Wren.
