Sat, 13 Nov 2010 10:38:34 -0800 The Atlanta Braves have hired Bob Johnson as a special assistant to general manager Frank Wren, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman. Johnson is expected to serve primarily as an advance scout, in a role similar to the ones he had with the New York Mets (2007-10), Texas Rangers (2005-06) and Oakland Athletics (1997-2004).
Sun, 10 Jan 2010 22:45:08 -0800 Heading into spring training, Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren believes his team is better than it was at the end of 2009, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Jeff Schultz. "We've got good baseball people in this organization and we feel good about this group of players. I can't get caught up in the media perception of what we've done to this point. The proof's going to be when we take the field," Wren said.
Thu, 03 Dec 2009 23:30:56 -0800 The Associated Press, updating a previous item, is reporting the Atlanta Braves are likely through with acquiring pitching help now that the team has acquired RP Takashi Saito via free agency. General manager Frank Wren has said the team is in the market for a power-hitting outfielder or first baseman, perhaps both, heading into next week's winter meetings. "Frank and Bruce (Manno, the assistant GM) are working on something else right now and maybe give us a chance to score a few more runs," Braves manager Bobby Cox said.
Wed, 25 Mar 2009 20:55:05 -0700 David O'Brien, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Braves RP Rafael Soriano (side) told team trainers he strained a side muscle while pitching in the Tuesday, March 24, game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. General manager Frank Wren said the severity of the strain wasn't known, so it was too early to determine whether Soriano would be ready when the regular season begins April 5 at the Philadelphia Phillies.
Wed, 28 Jan 2009 16:37:42 -0800 Mark Bowman, of MLB.com, reports Atlanta Braves RP Rafael Soriano (elbow) will be evaluated by team doctors next week. General manager Frank Wren thinks Soriano will be at full strength for the start of Spring Training.
Wed, 28 Jan 2009 16:08:45 -0800 Mark Bowman, of MLB.com, reports Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren met with free-agent SP Tom Glavine (Braves) Wednesday, Jan. 28. Glavine said he let Wren know that he is expecting to be ready for the start of the 2009 season. Glavine remains interested in returning but the team may not have enough money left over to satisfy the southpaw.
Tue, 27 Jan 2009 09:04:19 -0800 Jerry Crasnick, of ESPN.com, reports free-agent SP Tom Glavine (Braves) is expected to meet with Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren later in the week, according to a baseball source. Glavine has received a positive report from Dr. James Andrews and expects to be ready for Opening Day. He could be the front-runner for the No. 5 rotation spot if he returns to the team.
Sun, 11 Jan 2009 09:18:47 -0800 Updating previous reports, several media outlets reported that the Atlanta Braves reached a preliminary agreement with Japanese P Kenshin Kawakami Saturday, Jan. 10, but manager Bobby Cox could not confirm the deal, according to The Associated Press. However, he did say the team is interested in Kawakami. "We've had some guys watch him the last couple of years, and they like him," Cox said. General manager Frank Wren, assistant general manager Bruce Manno and Dan Evans, the agent for Kawakami, did not comment on the situation.
Thu, 18 Dec 2008 07:58:37 -0800 David O'Brien, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren is upset with the way negotiations went down with Los Angeles Dodgers SS Rafael Furcal. "I think you have to be upset with the turn of events," Wren said. "We don't do business this way. You don't expect people you have to deal with to do business this way." Wren indicated that Paul Kinzer, the agent for Furcal, negotiated all contract details for Furcal to sign with the Braves Monday, Dec. 15, and a term sheet was sent to Kinzer's office for Furcal to sign Tuesday, Dec. 16. The term sheet was never returned, according to Wren.
