Cardinals | Still looking for veteran catcher

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 04:55:39 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak is looking for options behind the plate to complement C Yadier Molina and C Brayan Pena.

Fantasy Tip: Molina may not be ready for Opening Day and Pena is little more than a backup that can be pressed into starting duty for a few weeks. The club needs more help, so monitor who the Cardinals get.

Cardinals | No big moves ahead for St. Louis

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 14:56:40 -0800

The St. Louis Cardinals will not pursue any other high-priced free agents, according to general manager John Mozeliak. "We still feel like from what we've been trying to do and been through this winter allows us ways to improve," Mozeliak said. "It's clear now this offseason is not going to have that dynamic signing that we tried to do with David Price and Jason Heyward. There isn't anything now that we're chasing with a nine-figure contract. We can take the time to see what we have in the players we control. Obviously, we're always open to adjusting."

Fantasy Tip: This bodes well for Randal Grichuk and Stephen Piscotty who should have all the playing time they can handle. Both are excellent young hitters who check out with admirable power and batting averages. Grichuk posted a .276/.329/.548 slash line with 17 home runs through 350 plate appearances last season, and Piscotty had a .305/.359/.494 slash line with seven home runs through 256 plate appearances. They're excellent mid-round targets in drafts this spring.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez staying in rotation

Mon, 18 May 2015 05:01:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez is not being considered for a demotion to the bullpen, according to general manager John Mozeliak.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) has had his struggles as of late, but there aren't many other options available. Marco Gonzales has struggled at Class AAA and Jaime Garcia may be ready, but that would be for Adam Wainwright's spot. Keep an eye on Martinez and hold off on starting him.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright has torn Achilles'

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 14:42:03 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright's (Achilles') tests confirmed a torn Achilles' in his left foot, and he'll be out for the rest of the season, according to general manager John Mozeliak. Wainwright will have surgery this week.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) may need nine to 12 months of recovery time, meaning he might not be ready for the start of the 2016 season. Keep tabs on his progress throughout the year. You can now safely drop him in all yearly leagues. Tyler Lyons is the most likely rotation replacement, with Marco Gonzales and Jaime Garcia both injured right now. Lyons will be a low-priced FantasyScore starter option, and he could be a sneaky commodity in the right matchups.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia impressing front office

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 04:55:46 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia has impressed many critics in his battle for the fifth-starter job. "I didn't know what to expect from him frankly, and everything we've seen has been very surprising. And very positive," general manager John Mozeliak said.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Garcia makes the roster be wary, because he does have a history of arm issues. Still, he has pitched well enough to be considered in the mid to late rounds of most fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | May reduce Adam Wainwright's workload

Mon, 13 Oct 2014 02:40:52 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright may have his workouts and/or innings reduced before the 2015 season, as the team fears this may be contributing to his late-season struggles. "Clearly in Adam's case being a veteran and his status on the team, we haven't really had to pull the reins on him as much as we have with younger pitchers. But having said that, given everything he has done over the last couple years and taking that aggregate sense, yes, we probably do need to look at that this offseason," general manager John Mozeliak said.

Cardinals | Evaluating catcher situation

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 00:27:49 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak plans to spend the next week evaluating whether C Tony Cruz and C George Kottaras will be a solution for the rest of the season or whether the team will seek a catcher at the deadline. "One thing we've always said is we'd like to see what Tony Cruz is capable of doing on a day in and day out basis," said Mozeliak. "But having said that, we also want to give ourselves the best chance to win."

Fri, 18 Jul 2014 12:48:20 -0700

Fri, 18 Jul 2014 12:42:34 -0700

Cardinals | Finding playing time for Oscar Taveras

Mon, 26 May 2014 23:56:42 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals are currently determining how to find big-league playing time for top OF prospect Oscar Taveras, but general manager John Mozeliak said it will likely come at the expense of someone else. "I actually think from a baseball standpoint he could play in the big leagues," Mozeliak said. "But we've got to determine playing time up here with the current roster. Are we at a point where we're willing to take away at-bats from the current roster and give them to somebody else?" If Taveras is called up it could be at the expense of OFs Allen Craig, Jon Jay, Peter Bourjos and Matt Adams.
