The latest John Mozeliak MLB and fantasy baseball news
Mon, 13 May 2013 00:34:26 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals SP Jake Westbrook (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, May 12, with right elbow inflammation. Westbrook originally felt discomfort during his start May 8 in Wrigley Field, though the team gave him a couple days to determine if it persisted. "It's really not that big of a deal," general manager John Mozeliak said Sunday. "Didn't want to push it. Didn't want it to become a big problem." The Cardinals purchased the contract of SP John Gast from Triple-A Memphis, and he will start Tuesday, May 14, against the New York Mets. Fantasy Tip: All indications are this injury won't be anything as severe as the Chris Carpenter or Jason Motte season-ending injuries were, although Carpenter wants to return as a reliever. The Cardinals will definitely miss Westbrook's 2-1 record and 1.62 earned run average, but fantasy owners should expect Westbrook back by the end of May.

"Knowing that the two players we're talking about have had positive outcomes in (their rehabs) provides optimism," Mozeliak said. "It's something you consider in your offseason strategy. It does mean we don't have to chase a shortstop at this point."
Wed, 05 Sep 2012 23:50:19 -0700 Updating previous items, St. Louis Cardinals SP Chris Carpenter (shoulder), who had surgery in July to alleviate the choking of nerves near his right shoulder, is building his pitch count with each rehab outing in an effort to rejoin the rotation before the end of this regular season. General manager John Mozeliak called that option "in play," and the Cardinals are open to using Carpenter as a starter down the stretch.
Sun, 22 Jul 2012 22:40:40 -0700 The St. Louis Cardinals may not add a starting pitcher at the trading deadline, given the improvement in health of SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) and the improved rotation in general. "If you were to go after another starter, who are you really bouncing out? That's why the urgency isn't quite there for rotation help as it was three or four weeks ago," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said.

Spring training officially begins for the team Sunday, Feb. 19, when pitchers and catchers officially report.
