Pittsburgh Pirates P Kyle McPherson (shoulder), who will compete for a job in the rotation this spring, was brought home early from winter ball due to a sore shoulder. General manager Neal Huntington said surgery will not be necessary and McPherson is expected to be ready for spring training.

But Huntington did not seem enthused when discussing whether Karstens could claim a spot in next year's starting rotation, a possible indication Karstens is a non-tender candidate this offseason.

The Pittsburgh Pirates intend to open the 2012 season with Pedro Alvarez at third base, according to team sources. "We're committed to Pedro as long as he's committed to doing what he needs to do," general manager Neal Huntington said. "The reality is that he has the ability to be a great player. Pittsburgh Pirates president Frank Coonelly is evaluating the status of general manager Neal Huntington, and The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Rob Biertempfel reports Huntington has not been offered a contract extension. "He is under contract for this season and it's our expectation that Neal will be here for a long time," Coonelly said. "He has hot been extended at this point. We'll continue to evaluate it as we move forward."
