Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington indicated delaying a prospect's "Super Two" service clock is not a driving factor in leaving a hot prospect in the minors. OF Gregory Polanco is still at Triple-A despite a 1.104 on base plus slugging percentage in 100 at-bats, and there are some fans wondering if Polanco is being kept in the minors to simply delay his service time.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP James McDonald (shoulder) could be out of the rotation when he returns from injury rehab. McDonald has struggled in all three of his Triple-A rehab starts while he recovers from a sore shoulder. He allowed four runs (three earned) and eight hits Sunday, June 16. Pirates GM Neal Huntington acknowledged that when McDonald returns to the Pirates, he might not rejoin the rotation.

Pirates | Kyle McPherson injured, sent home from winter ball

Pittsburgh Pirates P Kyle McPherson (shoulder), who will compete for a job in the rotation this spring, was brought home early from winter ball due to a sore shoulder. General manager Neal Huntington said surgery will not be necessary and McPherson is expected to be ready for spring training.

Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said "it's a bit early" for him to reveal what role, if any, SP Jeff Karstens will have with the Pirates in 2013. But Huntington did not seem enthused when discussing whether Karstens could claim a spot in next year's starting rotation, a possible indication Karstens is a non-tender candidate this offseason.

The Pittsburgh Pirates intend to open the 2012 season with Pedro Alvarez at third base, according to team sources. "We're committed to Pedro as long as he's committed to doing what he needs to do," general manager Neal Huntington said. "The reality is that he has the ability to be a great player. We have to work hard to help him achieve that ceiling and achieve that potential. But at the same time, we have a business to run and we have to protect ourselves against the downside."
