Mon, 20 May 2013 16:12:43 -0700 New York Mets struggling 1B Ike Davis was dropped to sixth in the lineup Monday, May 20, after his week-long trial in the cleanup spot was up. 2B Daniel Murphy is remaining in the leadoff spot against the Cincinnati Reds. Murphy hit the go-ahead home run in the leadoff spot for the first time this year Sunday, May 19. Murphy has an eight-game hitting streak. Davis went 1-for-24 in six games back in the cleanup spot last week. OF Rick Ankiel will hit second for the first time. Fantasy Tip: The Mets are considering demoting Davis to the minor leagues if he doesn't turn it around very soon, so you should be at the point where you are considering cutting him from your team, too, especially if you're in a shallow mixed league.
Sun, 19 May 2013 23:45:27 -0700 The New York Mets put OF Daniel Murphy at the top of the lineup Sunday, May 19, against the Chicago Cubs, and indications are he may stay there if the lineup needs a little tinkering to revive the offense. Murphy went 1-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, and he is now 3-for-20 in 23 career plate appearances from the top of the order, Mets' leadoff hitters are batting just .186 from the top spot, last in the National League. The team has scored three runs or fewer in 10 of their last 13 games.
Mon, 13 May 2013 13:30:29 -0700 New York Mets manager Terry Collins said INF Jordany Valdespin could see some time at second base if 2B Daniel Murphy continues to struggle. Fantasy Tip: Valdespin is playing a super utility role with the Mets, leaving him as an option mainly in NL-only leagues. He'll become a bit more valuable if he's playing often at second base, but it's unlikely that Murphy is benched outright.
Fri, 29 Mar 2013 06:32:21 -0700 New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy (intercostal) is in the lineup Friday, March 29, and will be ready for the start of the season.
Thu, 28 Mar 2013 12:17:02 -0700 New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy (intercostal) went 1-for-3 in his spring debut Thursday, March 28, and played five innings at second base. He attempted a head-first slide in the game, and he has no doubts he'll be ready for opening day April 1. Fantasy Tip: Expect Murphy to be ready to go on opening day unless he has a setback this weekend. Jordany Valdespin's value has dropped again now that it appears both Murphy and David Wright (intercostal) will be ready to go.
Wed, 27 Mar 2013 13:38:49 -0700 New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy (intercostal) could play in a Grapefruit League game Thursday, March 28. Fantasy Tip: If Murphy plays tomorrow, consider him a good bet to avoid the disabled list to start the season, since the Mets wouldn't be able to backdate a DL stint. Murphy isn't a bad middle infield option late in mixed leagues because of the power he can supply.
Mon, 25 Mar 2013 13:15:04 -0700 New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy (intercostal) went 0-for-5 in seven innings at second base in a minor league game Monday, March 25. Fantasy Tip: This is good news for Murphy, but he'll probably need to play in back-to-back nine-inning games before he's ready for major league action, making it unlikely that he'll be ready for opening day.
Fri, 22 Mar 2013 15:33:13 -0700 New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy (intercostal) isn't expected to play in a game this weekend, which makes him unlikely to be ready by opening day. Murphy hasn't had any spring at-bats after having a cortisone injection Feb. 19. However, he did take batting practice Friday, March 22. He would have to miss the first five games of the regular season if he starts on the disabled list. Fantasy Tip: With Justin Turner (ankle) also nursing an injury, Jordany Valdespin would be expected to start at second base to open the season if David Wright (intercostal) is ready to go. Valdespin should be considered for middle infield help in deep NL leagues.
Wed, 20 Mar 2013 19:34:51 -0700 Updating a previous report, New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy (intercostal) recently suffered a setback with his strained right intercostal muscle, and he was shut down. Since last weekend, he has received only treatment, and is not cleared for baseball activities.
Wed, 20 Mar 2013 14:36:50 -0700 New York Mets manager Terry Collins said 3B David Wright (intercostal) has a better chance of being on the opening day roster than 2B Daniel Murphy (intercostal). 2B Jordany Valdespin could start at second base and 2B Justin Turner (ankle) could start at third if both Wright and Murphy begin on the disabled list. Turner is expected to start in a spring game Friday, March 22, after dealing with a sprained right ankle. Fantasy Tip: This situation is very fluid with all of the injuries. Keep an eye on the Wright and Murphy in the final days of spring training. Valdespin seems to be the biggest beneficiary and could become a valuable utility man in NL leagues to start the year.
