In that role, he would oversee Latin America development and plans for the team's Spring Training facility.

Minnesota Twins general manager Bill Smith would like to add experience to his bullpen at the trading deadline but he realizes it will be hard. "There are about 20 clubs looking for bullpen help. We're in contention; we're right where we want to be. We dug ourselves a big hole in the first two months of the season, we climbed out quite a ways in the middle two months of the season, and now we're heading into the final two months of the season and we've got a lot of work to do," Smith said.

Phil Miller, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Twins C Joe Mauer (back) will not need surgery to fix the pain in his lower back, according to general manager Bill Smith. However, the team is still waiting on what the recommended treatment for Mauer's back is. Mauer has been doing non-baseball workouts to strengthen his body as he waits for the course of treatment.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune's La Velle E. Neal III reports Minnesota Twins C Joe Mauer (kidney) recently had surgery to eliminate a kidney obstruction. General manager Bill Smith stressed that Mauer's situation isn't serious, and he's expected to be ready to go in Spring Training.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune's Joe Christensen reports Minnesota Twins SP Francisco Liriano made his third start in the Dominican Winter League Tuesday, Dec. 16, and allowed four hits in 4 2/3 shutout innings. He's 0-1 with a 1.00 ERA. General manager Bill Smith said Liriano is building his pitch count gradually, just like pitchers do in Spring Training, and won't throw more than 75 pitches in any outing. Liriano will pitch in the World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic.
