Cubs | Jake Arrieta sliding above all others

Fri, 20 May 2016 13:03:18 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta's slider has the third-highest velocity and moves horizontally as it crosses the plate at a faster rate (9.9 feet per second) than any other qualified pitcher this season. Before joining the Cubs, Arrieta utilized his slider a career-high 17 percent of his pitches in 2011. In 2014 and 2015, he threw the pitch 29 percent of the time, and thus far in 2016, Arrieta has thrown his slider with 25 percent of his pitches.

In the past three seasons, opponents are hitting .181 on Arrieta's slider, with a .234 on-base percentage and a .267 slugging percentage. The respective major league averages during that time are .217, .257 and .339.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta has won seven of his eight starts this season and sits with a 1.29 ERA, a 0.84 WHIP and 55 strikeouts through 56 innings. He is producing at a historical level dating back to the middle of 2015, and he should be started with confidence in all fantasy formats whenever he takes the hill.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta punches out 11

Sat, 14 May 2016 18:02:19 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta allowed two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out a season-high 11 over eight innings in a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, May 14.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta bounced back from a short outing in a big way, and he remains on the short list of pitchers that are worth paying for in daily formats whenever they takes the mound.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta won't take hometown discount

Wed, 11 May 2016 18:38:50 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta, who is scheduled to become a free agent following the 2017 season, said that his preference is to remain in Chicago but he would not be willing to give the team a hometown discount.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta has posted a 0.92 ERA over his last 27 starts and the Cubs are undefeated in his last 20 regular-season outings. He is making $10.7 million this season and has one year of arbitration remaining on his current deal. The 30-year-old right-hander should be viewed as a must-start option in all fantasy formats every time he takes the mound, regardless of the opponent.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta in rare territory

Mon, 09 May 2016 10:59:59 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta has given up three or fewer runs in each of his last 27 starts, which is the longest streak for a pitcher since 1893.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta didn't have his best performance in a no-decision against the Nationals on Sunday, but he still only allowed two earned runs in five innings and struck out seven. Arrieta is easily the best pitcher in baseball right now. Start him every time out no matter the matchup.

Cubs | Short outing for Jake Arrieta

Sun, 08 May 2016 18:57:49 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits while walking four and striking out six over five innings in a no-decision against the Washington Nationals Sunday, May 8.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta has had some control issues recently, walking four batters in three of his last four starts. That being said, Arrieta is still 6-0 with a 1.13 ERA, so his fantasy value isn't really suffering.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta lowers ERA to 0.82

Tue, 03 May 2016 23:22:31 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta allowed just two hits and two walks with five strikeouts over seven scoreless innings in a win Tuesday, May 3, against the Pittsburgh Pirates, lowering his ERA to 0.82. He is the first Cubs pitcher to win each of his first six starts in a season since P Mordecai Brown won his first 11 starts in 1908.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta is having a tremendous season, and he is off to a historic start. If you drafted Arrieta in your fantasy league he is likely single-handedly keeping you on top.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta moves to 5-0

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 15:28:56 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta only went five innings in his start Thursday, April 28, against the Milwaukee Brewers, yielding one run on three hits and four walks, but he also struck out six, en route to improving to 5-0 on the year.

Fantasy Tip: Not the sharpest of performances from the reigning NL Cy Young award winner, but Arrieta was decent enough here to pick up the victory. In the process, his ERA went up to an even 1.00, but owners won't have any complaints with that. Simply put, the 30-year-old seems to have picked up from where he left off during his historic 2015 campaign, and continues to be one of the best starters in all of fantasy. His owners should be loving it every time he toes the rubber.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta to pitch Thursday

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 19:03:55 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta will start Thursday, April 28, against the Milwaukee Brewers after his start Wednesday, April 27, was postponed due to rain.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta is coming off of a no-hitter last time out, and he faces another ultra-favorable matchup here. The Brewers just 6-20 in their past 26 against the Cubs, and 1-8 in Taylor Jungmann's past nine starts, while going 0-9 in his past nine road outings. Arrieta and the Cubs should be in line for an easy victory.
