Cubs | Jake Arrieta avoids arbitration

Sat, 06 Feb 2016 08:06:07 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta has avoided arbitration Friday, Feb. 5, by agreeing to a one-year deal with the Cubs worth $10.7 million, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta is coming off a Cy Young winning season and should be the ace of the Cubs starting rotation this season. Arrieta likely will be selected in one of the early rounds of drafts this season and could be a No. 1 pitcher for a fantasy owner.

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 11:54:42 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta's arbitration hearing has been set for Feb. 9. The two sides are $5.5 million apart.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta set the bar extremely high for himself, and some regression from that historic second half should be expected. However, he's firmly in the SP1 range in fantasy.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta hopes to be stronger

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 09:07:03 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta's offseason workout routines are becoming legendary, and he'll need it after blowing out his previous career high in innings of 156 2/3 by pitching almost 250 innings last season, including the playoffs. His fitness routine is heavy on Pilates and includes a lot of running. Arrieta ran out of gas late in the season, but the Cubs believe he's well-equipped to handle that kind of workload this time around.

The Cubs will be smart about his workload, but it's unclear how they'll back off him in spring training. Arrieta said his offseason throwing program has been about normal. "I've had more than a couple weeks now, working on my deliveries," Arrieta said. "Dry deliveries. That helps when I get the ball back in my hand -- like I never really stopped throwing. The goal for me is to increase arm strength."

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta's Cy Young season in 2015 included a 1.77 ERA and 22 wins. It'll be extremely hard to match those numbers, but even if he doesn't match or surpass his award-winning season, the fact remains he's already established himself as a fantasy ace.

He should be one of the first starting pitchers drafted in all fantasy formats this spring.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta talks offseason plan

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 14:58:08 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta began throwing earlier this month and said his goal is to increase his arm strength over the next four to five weeks to be ready for the beginning of spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta is coming off a Cy Young campaign and deserves fantasy ace status heading into the 2016 season. Dating back to the beginning of 2015, Arrieta has a 2.08 ERA, a 2.13 FIP, a 0.92 WHIP and a 9.4 K/9, and he is worth targeting as one of the first pitchers off the board in drafts this spring.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta to be tendered

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 11:46:10 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta is expected to be tendered a contract by the deadline Wednesday, Dec. 2. SP Travis Wood, RPs Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, Justin Grimm, Ryan Cook and Rex Brothers and OF Chris Coghlan are also expected to be tendered. Arrieta will be a free agent after the 2017 season, and the Cubs are interested in a long-term deal.

Fantasy Tip: After Arrieta's Cy Young season in 2015, he'll surely be very expensive in fantasy baseball drafts next spring. He has now risen to the elite level of starting pitchers, and you'll have to spend an early round pick to secure him.

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 15:58:14 -0800

He also went on an otherworldly 20-game stretch to end the season where he went 16-1 with a 0.86 ERA and 147 strikeouts through 147 innings. Thu, 15 Oct 2015 10:40:20 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester will start Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, with SP Jake Arrieta following him in Game 2.

Fantasy Tip: Lester and Arrieta will face the winner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets Thursday. Arrieta has had a record-setting second half and remains the better option despite being touched up a bit in his last outing against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta sitting out series

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 14:05:24 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta would not be available to pitch if the team needs a Game 5 in their National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta ($8,700, 17.4% of cap) would not have enough time to rest in order to pitch again in this series. Arrieta likely will be an option for Game 1 of the National League Championship Series if the team makes it that far.

Cubs | No restrictions for Jake Arrieta

Mon, 12 Oct 2015 12:18:27 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta will not be on a pitch count against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the National League Division Series Monday, Oct. 12, according to manager John Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta ($8,700, 17.4% of cap) has been otherworldly dating back to the beginning of August with just four earned runs allowed over 13 starts during the span. He is a high-end FantasyScore option, especially considering his is pitching on his usual five days of rest.
