Minnesota Twins SP Nick Blackburn (wrist) will miss the beginning of the season because he's scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist Wednesday, Jan. 16, and he'll be in a cast for six weeks. Blackburn won't be ready in time for spring training, and he'll need to go through rehab work once his cast is off.

Minnesota Twins SP Nick Blackburn threw his sinker 88 times in 106 pitches in his start Tuesday, July 31, and allowed only two runs in eight innings. Manager Ron Gardenhire said he wanted Blackburn to throw his sinker often because it is a good pitch for him.

Minnesota Twins SP Nick Blackburn made adjustments while pitching for Triple-A Rochester for two weeks after Rochester pitching coach Bobby Cuellar helped Blackburn focus on calming his front side during his delivery. Blackburn was able to throw from the right arm slot and improve his command, and he gave up just one earned run in 15 innings in his two starts with Rochester. "Now when I'm missing with pitches, I'm missing in good locations as opposed to right over the middle of the plate," Blackburn said. "It just seems more natural for me than what I was doing earlier in the season." He'll make the start against the Kansas City Royals Friday, July 20.

The Minnesota Twins recalled SP Nick Blackburn from Triple-A Rochester Tuesday, July 17. In two starts since his demotion, Blackburn allowed just one earned run, 14 hits and a walk while striking out five batters over 15 innings. Blackburn posted a 55 percent groundball rate in those two outings.
