Pirates | John Jaso to play 1B

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 11:19:16 -0800

Updating a previous report, free-agent C/OF John Jaso (Rays) is expected to play first base after he agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He'll make $4 million per year and can make an additional $1 million annually in performance bonuses. Jaso is expected to play first base.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso has some fantasy prowess if he's eligible at catcher in your league. However, he's an irrelevant first baseman and outfielder.

Pirates | John Jaso signs with Pittsburgh

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 14:40:32 -0800

Free-agent C John Jaso (Rays) signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday, Dec. 23. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso has sneaky value in leagues using on-base percentage with a .373 mark over the past four seasons. Still, full-time at-bats may not be in the equation, and he hardly tips the scales across the other categories. Jaso is likely best left to NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues entering the 2016 season.

Rays | No offers extended to three Tampa hitters

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 15:12:35 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays SS Asdrubal Cabrera, C John Jaso and OF Grady Sizemore were not extended qualifying offers from the team.

Fantasy Tip: Without catcher eligibility, Jaso's fantasy value plummets in all mixed leagues, and Sizemore is nothing more than an only-league option. Cabrera is likely to join his fourth team in three seasons, and while there is power-average potential, Cabrera doesn't project as a starting shortstop in the majority of fantasy leagues for the 2016 season.

Rays | May retain John Jaso or Grady Sizemore

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 00:42:36 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays C John Jaso or OF Grady Sizemore could come back to the team in 2016, but team management indicates it will be one or the other and not both if it happens. While Jaso could command a two-year deal worth $10 million on the open market, Sizemore may get a deal around $1 million.

Fantasy Tip: Sizemore could be a sleeper in AL-only leagues as he had six homers in 175 at-bats and a .746 on base plus slugging percentage this season.

Rays | John Jaso, Grady Sizemore sitting out

Sat, 26 Sep 2015 08:17:01 -0700

Tampa Bay C John Jaso and OF Grady Sizemore are not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP David Price Saturday, Sept. 26. 3B Evan Longoria will serve as the designated hitter for the Rays. OF Brandon Guyer will start in left field and is batting first in the lineup. 3B Richie Shaffer will start at first base and is batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) and Sizemore ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) are sitting out because the team is facing a left-handed pitcher. Guyer ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) and Shaffer ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) have posted decent numbers this month but neither player is a must-start option for owners.

Rays | John Jaso not starting Tuesday

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 13:47:49 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays C John Jaso is out of the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 22, against the Boston Red Sox. C Luke Maile is hitting ninth against Red Sox SP Henry Owens.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is sidelined with the lefty on the hill for the Red Sox. Maile ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has only one hit in 15 September at-bats, so he carries no FantasyScore value. You may also want to forget about J.P. Arencibia ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) despite a .286 average in the past week. The Rays may play catchers who are in their plans for 2016, so stay tuned.

Rays | John Jaso back in lineup

Sat, 12 Sep 2015 11:34:17 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays DH John Jaso will bat leadoff against Boston Red Sox SP Rick Porcello Saturday, Sept. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is 5-for-6 against Boston this season with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored and he is 2-for-7 against Porcello in his career, making this a favorable matchup for him in FantasyScore.

Rays | Mikie Mahtook hitting second again

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 14:28:49 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Mikie Mahtook is starting in right field and batting second against Detroit Tigers SP Kyle Lobstein Wednesday, Sept. 9. C John Jaso is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Mahtook ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) has been solid against southpaws since joining the Rays with a .294/.368/.676 slash line over 39 plate appearances. It is a small sample size, though, so Mahtook checks out as a low-priced flier, at best. Jaso ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) rarely plays against southpaws, so make sure to avoid him when Tampa faces lefties.

Rays | John Jaso out vs. lefty

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 11:17:49 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays C John Jaso is not in the lineup against Detroit Tigers left-handed SP Matt Boyd Tuesday, Sept. 8. SS Tim Beckham is serving as the designated hitter and is batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Rays right-handed hitters are sleepers tonight on FantasyScore against the lefty Boyd. Beckham ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) remains a deep sleeper, though, and you'll only use him if you're desperate for salary cap relief.

Rays | John Jaso grabs some pine

Mon, 07 Sep 2015 07:40:20 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays C John Jaso is out of the lineup Monday, Sept. 7, with OF Brandon Guyer leading off.

Fantasy Tip: Guyer ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) faces lefty Randy Wolf and has a .274-5-17 line against southpaws. He's a fringe flyer on FantasyScore today.
