Pirates | John Jaso, Gregory Polanco out

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 13:05:36 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso and OF Gregory Polanco are not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton Wednesday, July 27. 3B David Freese will start at first base and is batting second. 2B Sean Rodriguez will start in right field and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Freese has only three hits in his last 17 at-bats but is hitting .328 with four home runs and 11 RBI against left-handed pitchers this season. He should be a fine starting candidat for owners in daily fantasy leagues. Rodriguez has also posted solid numbers against lefties in 2016, but owners should be able to find better options to use.

Pirates | John Jaso leading off again

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 09:17:13 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is batting first in the starting lineup against Philadelphia Phillies SP Aaron Nola Saturday, July 23.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso has only four hits in his last 19 at-bats and has been moved around the lineup over the past few days. Owners in most leagues should be able to find a better option to use in their starting lineups.

Pirates | John Jaso batting fifth vs. Philly

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 12:24:35 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is batting fifth against Philadelphia Phillies SP Zach Eflin Friday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso owns a .348 on-base percentage against right-handed pitchers this season, and he grabs a fantasy boost hitting behind the three best hitters in the lineup. Still, he's nothing more than a flier in daily contests and fringe starter in cavernous mixed and NL-only setups.

Pirates | John Jaso out Wednesday

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 11:46:37 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 20. 3B David Freese is starting at first base and is batting cleanup against Milwaukee Brewers SP Chase Anderson.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso has been cold lately with a .237 average, no homers and only three RBI in July, and he could lose more playing time with Freese hot. Freese has become a notable fantasy commodity in deep mixed leagues now with his .286/.367/.459 slash line, 10 homers and 39 RBI. He's a decent value pick in the cleanup spot tonight.

Pirates | PIT reshuffles lineup Saturday

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 14:11:08 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B/3B David Freese is not in the lineup against Washington Nationals RH Tanner Roark on Saturday, July 16. 1B John Jaso is playing first and batting leadoff, OF Starling Marte moves from the cleanup spot in the team's previous game to second and occupy left field. 3B Jung Ho Kang is hitting fourth and will replace Freese at third, INF/OF Sean Rodriguez is batting fifth and will be stationed in right field while 2B Josh Harrison will slide down from first to sixth in the order.

Fantasy Tip: Of the Pirates' top six hitters from Friday's 5-1 loss, only Andrew McCutchen will retain his spot in the order (third). Marte and McCutchen each have a home run in limited at-bats against Roark and are the best plays from Pittsburgh's lineup in daily or traditional formats today.

Pirates | John Jaso out Friday

Fri, 15 Jul 2016 14:07:19 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not starting Friday, July 15, against the Washington Nationals. 1B David Freese is starting against Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg, and Freese will hit second.

Fantasy Tip: All indications are Jaso is getting a regular off night at the plate. That opens the door for Freese (.291-10-38), who should be a solid fantasy option.

Pirates | Jung Ho Kang starting Saturday

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 15:58:55 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Jung Ho Kang is in back in the lineup batting cleanup Saturday, July 9, against Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester and will play third base. 1B/3B David Freese will replace 1B John Jaso at first and hit second, while C Eric Fryer will bat eighth and fill in for C Erik Kratz.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Lester is coming off a horrible outing, it is hard to recommend any of these Pirates in DFS or most normal-sized leagues, although it is worth noting Kang is 3-for-9 and Freese is 5-for-13 against the southpaw. Fryer is worth adding in two-catcher leagues and may end up becoming the regular catcher in Pittsburgh before long.
