Phillies | Charlie Morton's season over

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 09:25:38 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Charlie Morton (hamstring) needs surgery to repair his left hamstring, and he'll miss the rest of the season.

Fantasy Tip: It's another unfortunate twist for Morton after a really good start to the season. Adam Morgan has taken his rotation spot, but he's only NL-only depth at this point.

Phillies | Bad news for Charlie Morton

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 17:20:41 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Charlie Morton (hamstring) has a strained left hamstring, and although the Phillies didn't reveal the results of his examination Monday, April 25, manager Pete Mackanin said the news wasn't good, and Morton will be out longer than expected. SP Adam Morgan will be called up to start against the Cleveland Indians Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: Morton has a lengthy injury history, and with him unlikely to return soon, he can probably be dropped from all rosters in mixed leagues. Morgan doesn't throw hard and shouldn't move the needle much at all outside of the deepest NL-only leagues as a matchup play if he sticks in the rotation.

Phillies | Charlie Morton to the DL

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 16:37:51 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Charlie Morton (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, April 24, with a strained left hamstring, and he will have an MRI Monday, April 25, to determine how long he will be out. General manager Matt Klentak said a decision will be made later in the week on who will replace Morton in the rotation, but he mentioned SP Adam Morgan as a candidate.

Fantasy Tip: Morgan has been pitching well in the minors, and he could be worth a speculative grab in NL-only formats.

Phillies | Charlie Morton injures hamstring

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 17:51:32 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Charlie Morton (hamstring) exited his start against the Milwaukee Brewers with a strained left hamstring Saturday, April 23.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen if Morton will be able to make his next start, but his services shouldn't be missed by fantasy owners anyway.

Phillies | Charlie Morton to start in Cream City

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 21:05:31 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Charlie Morton is the team's probable starter for Saturday, April 23, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He has a 4-7 career mark against the Brewers.

Fantasy Tip: Morton has allowed just one run and seven hits over 12 2/3 innings in his past two starts, and he is a strong DFS play and seasonal fantasy option for a favorable matchup Saturday.

Phillies | Charlie Morton showing increased velocity

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 18:12:55 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Charlie Morton has experienced slightly increased velocity on his fastball this year. His four-seam fastball is averaging 94 mph through his first three starts, compared to an average of 92 mph in 2015 and 92.8 mph during his best season in 2013. Morton was clocked at 97 mph on the radar gun during his most recent outing Sunday, April 17.

Fantasy Tip: Morton is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA this season, with 16 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings. The 32-year-old right-hander is at his best when he is able to keep the ball low and the increased velocity is a bonus for someone who previously relied more on pitching to contact. In addition to seeing greater velocity on his four-seamer, Morton has also seen an uptick in velocity on his two-seam fastball; it went from an average of 91.8 mph in 2015 to 93.2 mph this year. He should be viewed as an option for NL-only and cavernous mixed seasonal leagues and is worth considering for daily fantasy contests if he has a favorable matchup.

Phillies | Charlie Morton effective in win

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 23:48:17 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Charlie Morton allowed three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a win Tuesday, April 12, against the San Diego Padres.

Fantasy Tip: This outing was night and day from his first outing, when he was tuned up in Cincinnati April 7. Over the past few years he has been a much better pitcher at home, posting a 12-10 record with a 3.10 ERA in 33 starts at home since the start of the 2013 season, while posting a 10-15 mark and a 4.74 ERA in 36 road assignments.

Phillies | Not a good debut for Charlie Morton

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 14:49:26 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Charlie Morton allowed five hits (one home run) and six earned runs while walking two and striking out three in just 3 2/3 innings in a loss to the Cincinnati Reds in his season debut Thursday, April 7.

Fantasy Tip: Morton showed flashes in his time with the Pirates, but he's a very middling major league starter in a bad environment in Philly. The Phillies are rebuilding and are likely to be one of the worst teams in all of baseball this year. There's little to like in fantasy about Morton this season.

Pirates | Pittsburgh moves Charlie Morton

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 07:54:27 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates P Charlie Morton was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday, Dec. 12, in exchange for P David Whitehead.

Fantasy Tip: The Pirates probably will add at least one starting pitcher in free agency. Gerrit Cole, Francisco Liriano and Jon Niese likely will be part of the rotation at this point. Cole and Liriano should be selected in all mixed leagues, while Niese may be an NL-only option at this point as well as some deep mixed leagues.

Phillies | Charlie Morton acquired by Philly

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 07:50:40 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates P Charlie Morton was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday, Dec. 12, in exchange for P David Whitehead.

Fantasy Tip: Morton is coming off a season where he posted a 9-9 record with 4.81 ERA in 23 starts. Morton struggled in his final three games of the season when he allowed 17 runs in 10 1/3 innings. Morton probably will be limited to NL-only leagues and possibly deep mixed leagues in 2016.
